Broward College Nursing May 2015

Published

Hi everyone I didn't see one made yet so I guess this will be the official thread for BC May 2015!

oh :/ guess we will have to find out lol

oh my goodness, just printed out the 10000000 pages for the second orientation. -.-

anybody know if we need a wristwatch? or can we get away with one of those pocket ones

The orange dosage calculations book should be fine. You honestly don't even really need it for the first semester unless you're really awful at math and need to do hundreds of practice questions and have everything laid out for you to understand it better. For me, doing the practice problems our teacher gave us was enough, but in later semesters you may have a professor who doesn't give you practice questions and just says "do chapters 5-15 in the book". As for the other books.. you really do need and use most of them. But yes, the good news is it's not nearly as bad for the rest of the program lol. For peds, ob, and psych you only need 1, maybe 2 or 3 if you decide to get the success books and study guides along with them for each class. You can buy those before each semester though, I try not to get them before I pass the class I'm currently in so I don't jinx myself :nailbiting: For NUR1210 you use the same perry&potter book.

Not sure if you can get away with a pocketwatch.. I've never seen anyone with one on campus. It's just easier to take vitals with a wrist watch.

Thank you for the info! Which campus do you go to? I decided to request a cancellation for that dosage book because I'd rather ask to see if we will need it first semester like you said. Its 100$ I'm putting back into my pocket.

Thank you so much everyone for the book information floating around- really appreciated. I will look at amazon, half and ebay before I purchase at the book store (unless it's cheaper there). Well, North and South you guys are really worrying us Central people because we have no information on orientation at all other than the date/time! We haven't even been advised of an orientation packet- but I will visit the book store this week to see if it's there and let you all know. I will also be looking into scholarships and loans this week. I looked at the generic RN schedule on the BC website and it seems the first semester is definitely the 'baddy' all others seem a little more laid back- is that correct? I mean semesters 2-5 have only one class each half term (with lab hours and clinical) right? From my understanding of this semesters clinical- are we going to the hospitals twice a week for 3 weeks then once a week for the remaining time?

For what? Process 1+2? No you are on campus 2 times a week for at least the first 2 weeks then once a week. You don't go to the hospital right away. Then in later semesters you have the first 2 days on campus and once a week usually in the hospital. Each teacher can change that as needed. We had one week we went twice to the hospital and skipped the next week. But they give you the schedule. I wouldn't say any semesters are laid back but they are less busy. ..lol.

As far as the math book. .. $100? Yes buy the cheaper book. That's expensive. My teacher didn't make us do specific questions from that. It's more to learn the process of that math. I bought that book used. I don't know what the other teachers require on other campuses, though. What did i worry you about. ..lol. It will be great. Don't worry. You can rent books. Lots of people do. I can't. I need to write in mine. (The ones for process are needed the whole program, same for med surg. )

For watches, I've only seen wristwatch with a second hand or that little watch that pins on your scrubs.

yeah, I bought all my other books because I want to keep them and review for the nuclei or future reference, but math i usually don't have a problem with and if it comes down to it, i will get it later on. Thank you so much for the information....and yes, that clip on watch was the one I was talking about, saw many of those for cheap on amazon. Im not sure which one is better. I have had an allergic reaction to my current watch so Im scared of putting anything on my wrist, id rather have it clipped to my scrubs.

What about a metal band? Easy to wash.

I'm attending North and we received our orientation package this morning. The dean is awesome btw. I seen the dress code for orientation just listed as formal and it's from 9-3 with an hour lunch.

Omg, I thought it was 9-12 I didn't open the attachment because I thought it was the same as the paper we were given at orientation . Thanks for mentioning it I will have to request off that day.

I was told Financial aid will kick in about 13-15

So between half.com and Amazon so far I bought 7 books for about $140. That's not including the 3 I had already purchased back in January, so not too terrible....still need about 5 more though (a couple of them pretty expensive) plus the nursing kit. Hopefully I get some good news tomm so I can purchase the rest. Especially since I still need to pay for classes and buy uniforms....

Hey Hammockbound or smilecuzimhappy quick question... on clinical days (when we start going to hospital) are we suppose to take anything with us? bookbag or bag? To carry stethoscope or any books? Or nothing at all?? Just curious about what they expect from us on those days. Any info would be great thx!
