Broward College May 2016 RN program

Published

Just wanted to start a thread for Broward's May '16 RN program! I'm finishing up my application process this week.

My hesi was a 87% overall, with 90's in Math, Reading, and Vocabulary, an 84% in grammar, and a 80% in AP.

My prerequisite GPA is a 4.0

Hello if anyone is still on this forum i was an august 2016 hopeful but unfortunate i am an alternate with a 3.0 from your group how many alternates actually got in? and did they attend orientation as well?

I don't know of any alternates that got in. No one really broadcasts that they were an alternate. I would recommend you go to orientation. I know of a girl that got in, went to orientation and then got spooked by how hard it looked so she gave up her seat. Some people do do the paperwork in time and some people just realize they can't afford it.

Hey guys. I have a couple questions regarding materials. What books do you recommend buying and which ones do you recommend renting. Also, besides a stethoscope and BP cuff, what other tools do I need?

For the books, fundamentals you only use for both process 1 and 2. The little Jarvis book and the clinical book can be a good source for the entire program when you need to learn the clinical skills and physical assessment. The Cox clinical diagnosis and drug guide you can use for the entire program. I never bought the dosage and calculation book, and I passed all my math test on the first try. Not sure about Pharm, we never use the book before, and we all passed the class. For process 1, you need to do an assessment, so you need stethoscope and pen light. They want you to buy the blue bag, but you do not need it until process 2.

I bought the fundamentals book, cox book, Jarvis, drug guide and pagana. I rented the math book but didn't use it once and didn't get the pharm book. You don't need the pharm book the professors tests come from the slides. I also rented The clinical book also but may buy it cheap when a graduating student sells it. I got the fundamentals book used on Amazon super cheap. I recommend buying it because you will carry it around so much and will probably need to highlight and write in the margins. My friend had a brand new one and now the cover broke off because of how much abuse it gets. You literally will be in that book all day everyday so it gets tattered and raggedy after a while. This is also why I didn't care if it was used since I was going to probably damage it anyways lol

As far as supplies, stethoscope, BP cuff, trauma shears? What else? Oh! Are calculators (basic ones) allowed for math or no?

Yes BP cuff, stethoscope and shears. That's it. No calculators for math.

For north campus with Melanie you CAN use a calculator, but it has to be the specific sharp white one from the bookstore and you can't use it in class, just for the math tests. You need the $200 nursing kit but you should wait till process 2 for that.

Actually for central they check for it on the first week during process 1. We didn't know that so we all had to run to the bookstore to get it. For central we can't use calculators for any tests or return demo.

Ah, I guess it really does differ a lot between campuses!

Yeah unfortunately. I really wished we could use a calculator. Majority of people retrack process 2 due to the math [emoji19]

The math test without a calculator is extremely difficult considering you can only miss one question. It is so discouraging.

does it have to be THEIR nursing kit? What if I already have BP cuff and other supplies?
