I know there is a lot of confusion going around with the new requirements for the BC nursing program so I wanted to start a thread for those of us finishing prerequisites and applying in January. I'm in the Core class now, but other than that I'm finished with everything else and getting very excited to start next year!
I understand its not all about me, but this years vaccine only proved to be 9% effevtive. so regardless if I had the vaccine or not it was going to spread.
Point is it's a requirement. Otherwise, you can't go to clinicals. It was the same in my LPN program. I was even sent home because I hadn't gotten it. Once I got it and submitted proof then I was allowed back to clinicals.

I'm in an LPN program and during flu season I never took it. Never had the flu shot in my life and have only had the flu 3 times in my life. Plus I've been a CNA for 11 years. As long as you wash your hands you should be ok. The flu shot is a joke IMO. the students that did take it in my class almost got kicked out the program. They were missing so many days because the shot got them sick. I'll wear a mask If I have to. Lol

The flu shot is a requirement. Just accept it.
There is no point in complaining about how "stupid" or "pointless" the flu shot is. Pookyp you cannot wear a mask unless you are required per isolation precaution. The flu shot is required during flu shot. Amazingly, this past year's flu shot was tailored to the exact strain but it's the same as with the Hep B shot. There's a waiver but if you sign it they will not allow you into clinicals.
Pookyp......I am right there with you. I understand that they say it is a requirement, but I see no point in infecting myself with this and risk getting the flu. So many people I know who have gotten the vaccine this year all were so sick with the flu. I'd say its been at least 10 years since I've had the flu. and my last job of the last seven years I was in constant contact with all different kinds of people. People I was more concerned about getting Hep C from than the Flu. I have also travelled frequently to third world countries, risked getting Malaria and yellow fever, and not had anything bother me. So my opinion the flu vaccine is a money making scheme.

Whether or not you believe it's a "scheme" it is still a requirement during flu season. You cannot wear a mask in clinicals and the dean of nursing even mentioned that it's not even proven that the vaccine gets you sick and it's required for clinicals. Your beliefs may be admirable but in nursing there is no part of it. You either get the shot or you give up your seat to someone who will follow directions. Every hospital and facility has a policy and if you want to be a part of it you must agree to their policies. No exception. Get the shot. It's not going to kill you and you still stay in your program.
Not to mention we will be in Peds during flu season. You are going to want to have the shot because kids can carry some pretty nasty germs. I was an elementary teacher and trust me during that time of the year kids are always sick and most often with the flu. Being in contact with sick children you're going to want to be as protected as possible. I lost immunity to the chicken pox and have received my first of two doses to protect myself from it. Sure there's a risk with every injection of a live weakened strand but the benefits far out weigh the risks. Going into the healthcare field you are going to be exposed to many diseases an if there is a vaccine to protect you, most likely you will be required to have it. I am not find of the flu vaccine, but since it is a requirement I will be getting it. Just take a deep breath, accept that it is something you have to do, and remember It will all be ok! :)
