Broward College hopeful for May 2013 Nursing Program

U.S.A. Florida

I know there is a lot of confusion going around with the new requirements for the BC nursing program so I wanted to start a thread for those of us finishing prerequisites and applying in January. I'm in the Core class now, but other than that I'm finished with everything else and getting very excited to start next year!

You may want to check with your campus, but south requires this. I called the office to double check.

How do I check? Was it on the physicals form?

It said it on the first page of the physical form that south sent out Monday. It does not say it on the physical we were sent from nursing admissions. That's why I would call the nursing department to see what they require.

Just saw it. Same here. Thanks!

I took the tb test and it was only a 2 step process of taking it and waiting 48 hours to come back and see if you have any reaction on your arm. if you dont then thats it... If you do THEN thats when you have to get another these. my physical was done if a 3 day process. BUT i do have a question -> i didn't take the flu shot because it said from sept-march. should i go take it?

According to the place I went what you did was a one step process. That's where I'm at. I go back next week for the second step. Google 2 step tb test it'll explain it. I haven't taken flu either it's a seasonal thing when we'll be in school this summer it will not be flu season. Come fall we'll have to get the shot.

Information on Two-Step TB Skin Test

The two-step test is NOT the usual PPD skin test in which you receive an injection of PPD and the test area is observed one time at specific time frame.

The two-step PPD test is used to detect individuals with past TB infection who now have diminished skin test reactivity. This procedure reduces the likelihood that a boosted reaction is later interpreted as a new infection.

The reason for the 2 stage PPD test appears to be the "booster phenomenon.” It occurs in some people who were infected with TB in the past because the body loses its ability to react to the tuberculin solution. Thus, when these people are tested many years after the initial infection they may have a negative reaction. However, if they are tested a second time within up to one year of the first test, they may have a positive reaction. This positive reaction is due to a "boosted" ability to react to the tuberculin solution. To avoid misinterpretation between a boosted response and a new infection, many facilities employ the 2-step testing procedure. In this procedure a person is given a baseline PPD test. If the test is negative, a second test is administered one to three weeks later. If the second test is negative, the person is considered uninfected. If the second test is positive, then the person is considered to have a "boosted" reaction to an infection that occurred a long time ago.

if this is the case, there is no way that the 2 step tb test can be done by 4/22. because lets say you take it tommorow (4/11) +48 hrs to come back (4/14)+ 7-10 days to take the second test (4/21) + another 48 hrs for results (4/23). Get it. that just doesnt make sense to me at all if the deadline is 4/22, how are we suppose to get that done.????

Yeah exactly... I took the ppd skin test and got the results when I cameback in 48 hours.... The physical sheets for north campus do not state that so I am unsure, I will be calling them tomorrow to make sure... I hope it not needed

I'm calm. My docs are due the 13th. :)

anybody going to south campus, do we need a flu shot? if not, we leave it blank, put N/A on it?

It says seasonally from September to march. We will be going from May to August which is not flu season. When we go to clinicals in August through December we will have to show proof we got the shot. Remember we have to show proof every 8 weeks. So to answer your question, no I do not believe that we need the flu shot for first semester but we will need it later on.
