Hi guys, is anyone else working towards starting the nursing program at BC in August 2011? I am working on my last pre-reqs this semester (spring 11) and then apply and hopefully get accepted for the fall semester. I just took and passed the hesi exam last night and that is one big load off my back. I also started my hep shots since it takes 3 rounds of shots and a total of 6 months to be fully immunized. I want to have all of my ducks in order to start the program. I am undecided whether to go to south or central campus. Any advice?
TO missy23pap:Thank you for the heads up about the testing format. I have the Evlove items from the bookstore. I will have to start looking into that. Is it something you take along with the course, or is it something you just do on your own time at your own pace for your own benefit? Not actually graded etc? Any tools ie helpful study guides, tests etc I can use/practice on, I will.
You can go to the evlove website register and add the perry and potter books, each chapter has review question that are similar to what you will see on your exam.
Also, if you add the clinical books you can view the video's in advance (wish I knew that before I started). You can also download the video to your ipod.
I brought several test taking book, most of them are collecting dust expect for "Nursing Fundamentals Review and Rationales" I have the second edition.
When you read your chapters in Perry and Potter always pay attention to the blue boxes----the instructors love to ask questions from the blue boxes. Consider Perry and Potter your new best friend. Always give your self time to read the chapters at least 2 times.
Also buy the modules in advance and start looking for the answers. when ever you see the word define don't just look for a standard definition. Know what is it-what does it look like - why is it important----what do you do if something is wrong. I have to give Mrs G credit for that part...
Your test question will usually include a scenario and you choose the answer that would best address the issue. So if you only know the definition--then you wont be able to answer the question.
You will have a lot on your plate when you start----so take the time now to read and start working on your module.
I'm more then happy to answer any questions you have......

I noticed all the blue boxes, basically they are the irregularities and what you should do to correct them... Point taken.
Also, the bookstore has been out of the modules for almost 2 weeks now. What are they exactly?
I was starting to stress over not having the assessment sheets too, and I know I'm not the only one. I'm thinking about just emailing J-CS and asking...I'm just going to have all my books, shoes etc in the back of my car just in case, and 2 copies of everything sounds like a good idea
Any info you have is much appreciated... especially regarding Pharm... Can you give us a general description, easy/hard? I study like a true nerd, but I'm just trying to get myself ready...
I know they switched from Gamble to J-CS, but I heard J-CS is a really good teacher, and we can learn a lot from her... would you agree?
Who do you have for pharm? I had HJ. I ended up doing really well in pharm. If you have him, he gives around 10% extra credit per exam. He tells you exactly what the EC will be in class.
I just had J-CS for OB, did well in her class. Pay close attention to everything she says in class. I'm not sure if she will teach process in the same way she did OB but there were questions on the test that she gave clues to in lecture. Now I have Gamble for peds..............
Don't fall behind on reading but don't read more than you need to. What you need to read is listed in the module so study according to the module. This means look through the module and then find the corresponding information in the book. Start getting a feel for NCLEX style questions. Most of the time there are 2 or 3 right answers and you have to choose the best right answer. The best advice I can give is to just stay on top of everything and practice your skills as soon as you get the chance. Some people are good in theory, some in clinical, some in both. Try not to let your nerves get the best of you (although it happens to the best of us :) A passing grade is 73%, an A is a 92%. Aim for the A but remember that C means continue. My class started with 70-ish people and we have fewer than 30 from the start still with us. Just hold on for the ride, follow the rules and stay positive!
Yes, that is the HJ I had. Honestly I did well on his exams and I have no idea how. I was always pleasantly shocked when grades posted. There were questions on exams that were nowhere to be found in the book or lecture. He has at least 15-30 true/false questions, multiple choice and sometimes matching or fill in the blank per exam. I studied my notes, and read the chapters a couple of times each & made notes. Know all meds he goes over plus what is in the book. The good thing is that he has lots of questions on the exams plus the extra credit. So you can miss quite a few and still get an A or B in the class. Which book are you using?
for all those attending south campus, and wondering about the assessment sheets, i just got this email:
these will be in the clinical folder which will be available to you when blackboard opens.
j. carter-smith, msn/ed, rnc-ob
so i guess that means they will be available to us on the 17th since we aren't supposed to get blackboard access until the day before classes start...
Oh YES!!!!! am glad you asked. I would advise you guys to start getting atleast a pair of scrubs from NOW!!! The bookstore runs out of sizes very quickly. I went to the North Bookstore today and they were basically out of alot of sizes. I had to then call the central campus and there I was able to get myself a Med size set. Tops-$20, Pants-$15 & Jackets $25.
I went back to the school today and all the prices went up. Top $25, Pants $20 & Jackets $30. I am glad that I bought a set in the past. I hope the professors don't make a big deal about lab coat with the BC logo.

:up:There's a great chance that you will get in the program. You can turn in your application and check your status periodically on the BC website. Good luck!!!
