This forum is for anyone applying to the nursing program at Brookhaven College for the spring 2016 semester.
I will be applying for the spring semester and would like to meets others who are applying as well.
Do you know what interfered? Was it just trying to balance everything? I have two little ones, so that is a bit concerning. But my parents are thrilled that I'm working on getting into nursing (they're both in the field), so I'm sure they'll be a great support system when my husband is out of pocket. I just keep telling myself "It's only 16 months to get through!"
Vgeosmi,
They both had 2 different reasons related to their kids. One of them said that she couldn't make it work schedule wise. She was constantly running around and got burnt out. The other one had middle schoolers whose grades were starting to drop and they were getting into trouble. She and her husband didn't have time to focus on them like they should.
I am 50/50 on which program to go into, although I am heading towards the 2 year. I would rather make sure that I can be successful and not waste time by getting into a program that I know I can handle from the start. Its only a few more months to do the 2 year. But, I'm still debating. At worst case, I will be opening up a spot for one of you guys! :)
I have heard that El Centro and Mountain View have excellent reputations for nursing school.
Has anyone heard anything positive about Brookhaven? Do you know of anyone who got jobs right out of this program? I am hearing that most hospitals aren't hiring ADN's in the Dallas area.
Thanks!
Ok, sounds like their kids are older. Mine are little (3 and 5 mo) so have schedules limited to things like day care and bath time. That's a big part of the reason I want to get into a program sooner rather than later.
I've heard good things about Brookhaven. I don't know how hard it will be to get a job, but I do know a lot of hospitals are Magnet (or working on becoming Magnet recognized), which requires a certain percentage of BSNs over ADNs. I think you can get hired as an ADN but you have to sign a contract stating you'll acquire your BSN within 2-3 years.
I have a 5 month old and a 5 year old step-baby. They are not in school yet but my 5 yr old will be soon. I don't want to miss her first day of school, those type of memories are irreplaceable. My 5 month old is also starting to experience a lot of firsts right now as well (first steps, first soft foods, etc). I think the 2 year program will give me more time so I don't miss out on those experiences.
I think I know which program I am going to accept, I just needed to talk about it a little and think things out.
I've heard Brookhaven is more intense and I think not as many apply because it's so accelerated. It's super hard to get into El Centro/Northlake so congrats to those who got in!!
Nursing school sucks The longer programs are a little more slower paced and you get Summer's off. I remember a mom in my LVN program crying on her sons first day of school because she had to be in class
I'm probably crazy cuz I'm ready to just jump in and get it done so this 16 mo program is right up my ally!! But everyone is different and we all have different priorities, just do what works best for you!
I was worried about missing my son's first day of school but I've heard with the Brookhaven program we are off pretty much the entire month of August so I'me 90% sure I won't miss his special day. I have an 11 year old 6th grader and a 4 year old, both boys. I think it will be extremely stressful but well worth the short time investment for our future.
