Brookhaven/Mountain View Fall 2009

Published

Is there anyone else applying for this fall. I believe the program is going to be accepting about 80 students since Mountain View is accepting a class this Fall. I'm not sure how many points I will have yet, because I'm going to retake my HESI on Feb. 12th. So we'll see. Yet, this is my first time applying and I'm taking my Patho, Pharm, Dosage and End of Life as we speak. So EVERYTHING is riding on my HESI. Good luck to everyone! Let's hope and pray everyone on Allnurses gets in! ;)

Has anyone heard what the lowest score was that they accepted into the program? I know that DallasMonty said someone had a 28. Just wondering if that is the lowest score.

I talked with a 27 and they didn't get it. 28 might have been the magic number which was the number last semester.

Congrats to all of you who have been accepted! I am curious to know how many points you all had and if you completed all your support courses. I heard from a friend who heard from a friend that if support courses are not completed, the application will not be considered regardless of what points you have...period. Is this true

That isn't true. I was lacking Microbiology, which I am in now. But, it has gotten so competitive and the points totals so high that you pretty much have to have them all completed to get close to the 30 mark. Now, it is possible to score a perfect on the HESI and only have a few classes done and be in the upper 20's and low 30's but Ann Cortez told me one that they really prefer those students with most of their supports completed. She said that nursing school is just too hard if you haven't had the basics.

Thats good to know, I will have 33 points for Spring 2010 without dosages and end of life. I am taking micro this summer, but I guess it would be to my advantage to get those two classes out of the way this summer as well.

Thanks for the information DallasMonty, I feel much better knowing that. I'm taking microbiology for the Maymester, do you plan on selling your book by any chance? Any advice you can give about the course? Is it a hard class? I'm kinda concern because I'm taking 2 classes for the Maymester, Microbiology and Dosage. I have other things that I have to juggle, hope I can handle it.

Hi, I was reading some of the posts and I'm a little confused...some posts are saying something about support courses? Right now I'm taking my prereqs at Eastfield and I will be finished by the end of Fall '09 and plan to apply to Brookhaven. I thought that you can apply when you finished your prereqs? Should I take some support course during the Spring and Summer while I wait for a response to my application? I can't take any before b/c that will push me back a whole semester!! I will call an advisor next week...I can't call now b/c they are busy registering for maymester and summer. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Kani - You are Crazy!! I can't believe you are taking Micro in the Maymester. There is so much that you have to do I couldn't even imagine having to finish it in less than a month. But I guess you do go for like 8 hours a day so I could be doable. I did Chem in Summer I and it about killed me. Who is your instructor? Do you have your book list? I will sell you my lab manual (unmarked) and book if they are the same. Dosage is cake, if you can handle some basic math. Let me know if you need that book too.

Karma,

Yes, you CAN apply after the pre-reqs and HESI but you most likely will not get in. The past two semesters, the best I can tell is that a 28-ish got in. If you take the HESI and got a perfect (can be done but I have never met anyone who did) they count 100-75 = 25 points. If you make a 92, 92 - 75 = 17 points. Get it? You take the say 17 points, or whatever your number is, and add that to the GPA of your pre-reqs, say 3.5. 3.5 + 17 = 20.5. Not even close to getting in.

You need the extra points from support courses (12 possible if you take them all) to really get you competitive. Plus, from what we have heard from the instructors and 4th semester students, if you get into the program and you do not have classes like Pharmacology or Patho, or even A&P II, you are really behind and the instructors will not wait for you. I met a few graduating nurses a week ago and they both had all of their support courses done before the entered the program. Both said that they couldn't even imagine the extra course load if they had to add a few extra hours for Dev Psych, or EOL issues, or any of those other supports. It was overwhelming enough with just the nursing classes.

Also I spoke to someone in the nursing office at BH and she said that even if you rolled in with a high or perfect score on the HESI, you might be likely passed over until you complete the majority of your support courses. They too recognized that you are just doomed to failure if you have to try to do it all in 16 months. I think this avenue of thought is from past semester experiences.

On a personal note from someone who has completed them all, DO IT! You will make yourself more competitive, you will have a lighter class load once your in, and you will have the necessary back ground in Pharm and Patho to have it little more confidence. Now, I don't start MV until the fall so I probably do not have any idea what I am talking about but I think my theory is sound. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck!

Thanks a bunch Dallas. I will be going to the next info session at BH/MV on June 16th. Now I can better manage my classes and space them out in order to get good grades since I now know that I NEED the support courses to get my points. Good luck at MV!!

Has anybody got a call or an e-mail about being an alternate into the program?
