British/US Passport

Published

Hi there,

How many UK nurses living in the USA stiil use their UK Passport - I am assumming that you have dual citizenship.. I have a US passport and was debating reactivating my UK one (expired in 1998) but the fee is outrageous and their photo requirement is over the top! I would love your thoughts. I also read somewhere that the US authorities prefer you use your US passport to exit/enter the US then the UK one! Blossom48:nurse:

i think you will not be allowed to have the two citizenships, US doesnt aLLOW DUAL CITIZENSHIP,

Absolute nonsense!

Can you provide a credible citation for that?

If you have, or have access to, someone else's US passport, turn to page 5 on the old version, or page 7 of the newer "biometric" passports, and you will see exactly where they stand on dual citizenship. They recognise it 100%

There are some countries which do not allow dual nationality (India leaps to mind), but the US, UK, Canada, Autralia, NZ etc are not among them.

Both my UK and US passports are current, and my UK one was renewed in the US, using dollars.

Everything I`ve read on the UK and the US passport sites definitely states that you can have dual citizenship and carry a US and UK passport. When I posted this thread I was just debating whether it would be worth it to me to renew my UK passport after I let it lapse 10 yrs ago. Bloss

As an American living in the UK, I know plenty of Americans that do have dual citizenship. And as soon as I can cough up the £655, I will, too. The countries don't allow dual citizenship with certain other countries. But US/UK is ok...and yes, you most certainly can be a dual citizen.

Yes you can have dual citizenship, and Germany allows this if you still have ties like family or property or so in Germany.

Absolute garbage, rubbish...

I have had dual for 8-10 years and no problem.

Facts are wrong my dear.

Bloss,

I've left my passport to lapse, it was cheaper to get a British one, so I said 'sod that'.

Years later, it's hitting me in the face, because we now want to go to Australia, they want a CRB check from my country of origin although i haven't been there for donkeys, haven't got a single soul still living there, the country of origin is asking me for....a passport in order to release an up to date CRB! And the amount they request for the new passport is about 4 times higher:banghead: and it involves soo many explanations, paperwork, declarations, about 1300 quid....and I MUST have it!

I'll never make this mistake again LOL.

Mind you, it's even more expensive to give up that citizenship:devil:

when we apply for citizenship next year we plan to keep both passports, and renew them as needed. the americans can make you swear allegiance to their country but they certainly cannot take away british citizenship. i have pension, property and life insurances and bank accounts over there, so dont want to let it go. and you never know, the way the american health system is we may be forced to return to the uk for health care, even if we do have to wait to renew it, we paid into it for long enough.
