British Educated RN applying to California BON

Hi all - 

I am a British trained nurse and I have recently passed my NCLEX that I applied for through the New York state board of nursing. Upon application to the NYSED I knew that I did not have all of the necessary clinical/ theory in  peds/ obs/ psych but I was advised to apply anyway and sure enough it went through without any issues. 

 

I have now decided that I would prefer to live and work in California and was looking to apply through endorsement, but I have heard that the California BON is the strictest in the US when it comes to verifying credentials. I have trawled through the forums and have come across many people who have been refused due to their lacking in (for example) med/surg, and they have then had to apply to a university such as Unitek for a hugely expensive top up course to make up the minimum required hours. 

 

My question is this - has anyone successfully made it through the California BON credentialing process without all of the required minimum theory/ practice hours in OB/ Peds/ Psych? Has anyone had the experience that I had with New York, but in California instead? If so I would feel a whole lot more confident starting my California endorsement process. If not I am unsure if I can justify paying such a huge amount for a top up course.

California is strict and I seriously doubt they will accept application without having to make up hours. You may even have difficulty endorsing to other states if missing obstetrics or Paeds as some will still ask to see transcripts or reports like CES

Thank you Silverdragon102 for your response. I would be keen to hear from others experiences too. It would be interesting to hear of people that have been educated within the US who perhaps also didn't meet the criteria and were either denied or given a license to practice.

By stating that you lack necessary clinical and theory aspects of OB, Peds and Psych, there is a high chance that you will be required to retake these courses again. California is hard one to beat for international grads like you and me. I graduated from the Philippines and I was required to retake Med-Surg and OB. During my class, I met an Armenian national and Chinese national doing the same thing, and there were Australians too. Well, we made it, we did the courses after a few years of applying. 

There's just no way that California will let you through. They do their own evaluation so they really look into your transcript thoroughly. If they think that they need you to retake courses, they will require you. And they won't just consider whether you can pay the course/courses or not. A requirement is a requirement. Some are required 1 course, some are 2 or 3, and few were even required to retake the whole program. And some even have Master's degree already from their native countries. Some are still on the waitlist.

International nurse here from Europe, I have applied to the CGFNS for Illinois Board, and I had encounter so much resistance from them, is there a possibility to apply to the California Board of Nursing? Where can I find information about applying there. I have already passed the IELTS test.

Also any advice from personal experience is well received.

Unless you have a US SSN or ITIN then you can’t submit anything to California

Vince_reads, may I ask how did you manage to go to the university to complete Med-Surg and OB and keep working as a nurse? Is this possible in the U.S? I am a European graduate and I believe I will have to do some courses to get the license for California... Thank you very much!!
