Brenau ABSN Spring 2019

Published

Hello everyone!

I was recently accepted into Brenau's new ABSN program and wanted to connect with other accepted students as well as prospective students. What are you guy's feelings regarding the program in general? I'm just ready to begin my career as a nurse the quickest route possible!

Did you go the orientation this month?

They told me January 4th. I got a late acceptance.

Ok, awesome. Maybe meet you then.

That'd be great!

Hello All,

It's been a little while so I wanted to find out how your classes are going. What is your schedule like? I am thinking about applying but not sure I can make this program work. I work full time nights, 5 children, and my husband is not working now. Thanks in advance for any responses.

I was waitlisted at Emory for their BSN otherwise I was looking at GSU's ASN. I like the idea of the smaller classes at Brenau so I'm excited for that. Also, because I studied overseas I don't have the proper pre reqs to apply to other schools right now unless I wait another year to get them done.

How did you not have the proper prereqs for other schools, while having them for Emory? That seems odd. Also, Brenau seems tempting with their 16-month ABSN, but I think it's an M-F 9-5 type of deal. If you are in a situation that required you to work some, it will be very tough. I also thought it might be easier to get some of my prereqs in there, but after speaking with an advisor they wanted me to even retake non-science prereqs that were older. That's almost a deal breaker, though they turned me on to Portage. However, If I'm going to retake prereqs anyway, that opens up many other schools.

Emory is a private school, so I guess they didn't require all the other prereqs that public schools wanted you to have at the time I applied. I obtained my first bachelors overseas so I never completed classes like American history or American Government.

I ended up doing some of my prereqs through Portage mainly for attending Brenau.

Thanks for the quick response. Yeah, I have a Bachelors, so the ABSN at Brenau sounds good to me. Of course, after reading some comments here, I'm not so sure. Chattahoochee Tech is my first choice due to the cost and the fact that they'll accept my older prereqs. I'm working on other backup options as well. My only concern with Portage is that I'm not sure that other schools will accept them if CTC and Brenau don't work out. Kennesaw State said they think so since they're in the "equivalency tool", but they were going to check with the Biology Dept. I'm still waiting to hear from Georgia Highlands on the matter (of course, they also require you to be a CNA).

Do you do any research on Portage and other schools?

Yeah, I don't think many schools accept Portage but I didn't really look into it so much since at the time I only had Brenau and Emory going for me. I mainly did it because it was so cheap and I had a good feeling that I was going to get into Brenau. The only other place I was really looking into was GSU's ADN program.

To be completely honest, it is very time consuming. A few of the students do work part time but they have said they do find it hard trying to find the extra time to study. Otherwise, it has been going well so far.

They definitely do not prepare students to work as an RN. They almost lost their accreditation and had conditional accreditation for a while. Their accreditation is up for renewal again in 2020.

For the amount of money it costs to go there, you do not get quality education.

I hate to hear this. On paper, it looks like the right fit (outside of the cost), but maybe I'll have to keep it as a backup only. Mercer looks good too with their new ABSN, but I think it's even more expensive. Brenau seems to make their "total cost" tough to find out. When you talk to someone you get different costs per hour than are listed on the site.

Do you feel good about the program? Is it as bad as some other posts make it sound?
