One of the threads I saw on this topic was a while ago, so lets get an update.

I just got sclerotherapy for some spider veins and varicose veins (im only 25, so they weren't too bad yet, nothing "bulging" but they were pretty visible), and have been wearing Futuro brand thigh high 18-20mmHg strength stockings since the procedure.

the doctor who did it simply told me "make sure they are medical grade compression".

I will be adamant about wearing them on days i work on the floor.

Honestly, besides the post procedural swelling/bruising/soreness, my legs overall feel better at the end of the work day after wearing these.

To the nurses who wear compression stockings for prevention/maintenance of spider and varicose veins: which brand do you prefer and what strength? Thanks in advance!

I've thought about doing this. I hope more people respond.

I wear Nurse Mates compression socks. You can get them in medical grade compression and in varying degrees of compression. I am still in nursing school but am a more "seasoned" student (42). I noticed that my legs were killing me after clinicals so thought I would give them a try. I love that my legs feel great after 13hours at the hospital. Some of my preceptor's have even decided to try them after hearing me rave.

Hopefully, you find something that works for you!

I've heard that they can help a lot with leg fatigue and I've looked at the compression socks in scrub catalogs. Is there ever a time when they're contra-indicated?

Well-regarded brand: Jobst.

Start with lower compression, and go up to no more than 20 to 30 thigh-high.

I was just coming in here to post about what kind to get as I start nursing school in the fall and have heard that they may be useful during clinicals. I work in a hospital already and there are days where my feet hurt/swell so they'd be useful now as well.

I'm trying TED hose right now, just the knee high. It's not bad. Make sure you measure your leg and there are general charts out there if you don't have actual sizing. I was surprised because I thought I'd be a medium but I was a large. If I had bought what I thought I was, I would have bought a size too small.

I like Nurse Mates knee-highs with 15-20 grade compression. I have yet to try Jobst, but for the money, I think Nurse Mates are good.

I just ordered a pair of Zensah compression socks. I'm not only a nurse but a runner. So I'm on my feet all the time. They're $40 and you can get them at zensah.com They also come in a variety of colors too.

Thought I'd chime in - have had really great success ordering from Compression Stockings & Compression Socks by Jobst, Mediven, Juzo, Sigvaris, Allegro and Therafirm - BrightLife Direct. The phone operators are really helpful in choosing the correct size for me and I've actually found some cute patterns on there! The Allegro brand is definitely the best price - and work well - but I've splurged on a pair of the funky tie dye ones by Juzo Juzo Soft Tie-Dye Knee Highs 20-30mmHg - 2001ADtd Fashion aside - both of these brands have worked great for keeping my foot swelling down and preventing more spider veins.
