Boston Direct Entry Program - Calling All Applicants!

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Published

Hello everyone - I just wanted to create a thread for those of us applying to direct entry programs in the Boston area to talk. Has anyone heard from any schools yet? Although I did not apply to Regis early decision (I am applying by the regular deadline), I know that they have likely already notified people - congrats to those who got in! I called Boston College a few days ago, and they said they are notifying people late February. I'm also applying to MGH, Northeastern and Simmons.

Good luck to everyone! :nurse:

I like your optimism Lisa :) GAGirl, here's hopin the waitlist opens up for you. I know that, at least for the masters entry program, they took people of the waitlist, so it's good to know that it actually means something to be on it...

choco80-thanks so much for your encouragement! Good to know that they did take some people off the waitlist for the master's program! If I get in, you all will probably will hear me yell from here back down to GA! :w00t:

Hi!

I am new to this thread but happy to finally find one for 2011 applicants! I applied to MGH, BC, NU, and Regis. I was accepted to Regis but the deadline for the deposit is 2/1 and I really wanted to hear from the the other schools before I made a decision (BC and MGH are my top choices)...

I talked to admissions today at both schools-- MGH said that they are sending out letters for Direct entry MS on February 16th, and BC said "end of feb". Hopefully we hear back sooner! Fingers crossed and good luck to everyone!

Thanks for the update! though now i'm sure we will all be either glued to our phones, waiting at our mailbox, or compulsively checking our emails on Feb.16th haha. Northeastern I believe begins interviews at the end of February and you hear back relatively quickly after if you receive an interview.

Are you are fairly confident you'll get in somewhere? I'm so nervous. I'm confident and keeping optimistic but then once a day there's always those scary admissions statistics that pop into my head and give me that daily anxiety

Hey everyone! I was stoked to find this thread in allnurses, but now I cant stop checking it every few hours to see if anyone has any updates lol. I applied to the direct entry programs at NU, MGH, and BC. I spoke with the program director at NU last week (Janet) and she told me that interviews would begin the first two weeks in February. I also called MGH and BC recently and was told that applicants should be hearing back in March.

PsychLisa, I also applied for the child/adolescent psychiatric track. I've talked to a few of the students in the program at NU and they told me that psych is less competitive as some of the other tracks...hopefully this is good news for us!

Good luck to everyone during these stressful times!

Hi PsycMC,

Thanks for the info! That definitely makes me feel a bit better. Even when I went to the open house at MGH they said they always receive the least amount of applications for the psych track, which in my mind...makes us stand out a bit? I am so eager to hear back I can't wait! Out of curiosity, what sparked your interest in psych? Everytime I tell people I want to be a psych nurse they seem surprised so I'm always curious to see how others view the field, especially others who want to do the same.

PsychLisa11:

Good to hear about MGH. My top 2 choices would be MGH (because it's shorter and we get into the specialty portion quicker), and NU (because I think the co-op portion sounds awesome).

I did my undergrad in Psychology and knew I either wanted to go into business or clinical. Unfortunately, I chose business and got a MA in Industrial Psychology. After working a few years "in the field" I knew I chose the wrong path. The money was good but I had no passion for it.

So I decided to volunteer in some hospital/psyc settings to see if I still found it desirable. Turns out I really enjoyed it and wanted in. I originally was thinking of attempting med school and becoming a Psychiatrist but the numbers of years it would take along with hearing that theres more of an emphasis on prescribing and less on therapy was kind of a turn off. Then I heard about psychiatric mental health nursing. I couldn't believe it would allow you to have prescriptive privileges and the ability to practice psychotherapy. So I decided to go for it.

How did you become interested?

Hey PsycMC: thanks for sharing, we have almost the exact same trajectory--so weird!

I'm currently a Senior at Northeastern and will graduate in May with a BS in Psychology. I started off pre-med with the intentions of becoming a psychiatrist (just as you did). However, last year I interned at Children's in the psych unit and found that the psychiatrist on the unit has a much less personal interaction with the patients in comparison to the rest of the staff; especially the nurses. My supervisor kept pushing me to look into nursing since she said it would be a better fit for my personality. Just like you, I was shocked to find out that psych nurses have almost identical privileges to psychiatrists and the more I learned about the field, the more I was hooked. The nurses on the unit kept pushing me to look into it and after I did, I knew it was the best fit for me. In my opinion psych nursing is the best of both worlds; the medical perspective of psychiatry with the compassion perspective of nursing.

Northeastern is my top choice mainly because I've had such a great 4 years here as an undergrad, however MGH is a close second. Now if we could both just get in, I have a feeling we'd make great psych nurses!

Hi PsyMc - Glad to have you on board! I also check this a few times a

day to see if there are any updates :) I wouldn't be surprised if at

least one school started notifying people in the next week, despite

what they are all saying about late Feb/March (isn't it funny how

several of us are getting different answers from them too?)

PsychLisa - You asked if we were fairly confident we would get in

somewhere. I would like to say yes because my numbers (GRE, GPA) are

good, however I come from a non-medical background, plus I'm taking the

majority of my prereqs this spring/summer. I know that a lot of the MA schools

say you don't need to finish the prereqs prior to applying, just

prior to enrolling, however I think it might be too much to take the

majority of them at this point (they don't really have a science GPA

for me). As for the non-medical background - I think I spell out why I want to be an NP nicely in my essays (I have wanted to take care of patients for a long time - ever since I was a child - and I have a good amount of ancillary experience in healthcare), but I am not sure how an admissions committee will respond - my application might be very polarizing. We'll see :)

Anyways, it sounds like you guys have great reasons to go into psych. I think psych NP makes a whole lot of sense - I have friends who are psychiatrists, and they often complain about the exact same things you guys have pointed out...

Hey Everyone! I've applied to Direct Entry Master's programs at BC, MGH and Columbia and am also anxiously awaiting responses. It does appear that people started hearing around this time from BC last year. Hopefully we'll all hear some good news soon....good luck to all!!!

Hi everyone!

For those who said that NU has interviews the first two weeks of February, were we supposed to hear if we were granted one by now? I haven't heard anything other than my application is complete :(

so have you heard yet whether or not you received an interview? if so, how did you hear?
