Books for CRNA School?

I am currently going for my RN but will be applying to CRNA colleges when the time comes. I am wondering what books you have all had to get and also what books you recommend that you have also bought.

Since i will be having "downtime" between colleges, I feel i should keep fresh in studying as well as getting a jumpstart on what I will need to know later.

A good novel to go to bed with. It helps to unwind and get your mind off of the overabundance of materials that will be piling up in front of you.

Gas man- you are so funny!

I was looking for the required text lists. No reason not to start sonner than day one and keep my mind fresh at the same time.

I already have plenty of other good books.

I agree with gasman! You will have such a steep learning curve as a critical care RN. Transitioning from nursing school to a unit taking care of critically ill patients is very challenging. In the ICU, you will need to learn hemodynamic monitoring, pharmacology and titration of drips, advanced assessment skills, etc. Things they did not teach in nursing school. This will keep you plenty busy, believe me!

SLSB- I appreciate the concern but I am well aware of what I am in for. If I wanted to relax and read a novel I would have asked for recommendations on that. I have plenty of time relaxing and one way I do is by reading which I have always done. Would rather read a book to help my career and future than a trashy novel any day.

I feel it's my choice to want to learn ahead so why shouldn't you want to help me here? I don't see why everyone is so unwilling to share their school's book lists or favorite study guides.

like I said, I have a LOT of downtime and want to keep fresh- maybe even write a book or something to really stay up to date on equipment and procedures.

Sorry, i misread your OP and thought you meant while in CRNA school. As for now lots of journals and articles on critical care practices. Then once in CRNA school get a good novel. Best of Luck

I notice that posters tend to shy away from giving information about CRNA school to OP's who have yet to finish Nursing School. :rolleyes: You can try searching this bulletin board using key words, or try going to Amazon.com and search through their popular book lists regarding the subject. You could always go to EBay and search for the most expensive Anesthesia Books. ;) Try key words in your library database. Try looking up websites of professional organizations that recommend books or personalized webistes from students that have already been through the program. There are endless ways of obtaining pertinent literature. Journals and Articles was a great suggestion. I believe you can obtain subscriptions fairly cheap from EBay. Anesthesia Journals are very expensive and I believe you must be either Certified or in a program to have access to them. Someone correct me if I am wrong. :chair: Hope this helps. Edit: You can also try going to the site of the major publisher of Medical literature: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins and look through their Anesthesia collection. Have you tried calling the school and inquire about recommended literature? Whats the worst that could happen, right?

Funny that CRNA's would be so unwilling to help considering they also were once in Nusring school as well. Everyone has to start somewhere and when you have a little help and guidance along the way it saves TONS of time and many times propels you even further forward with this help.

So, I will ask once again- is ANYONE willing to share their book lists for their CRNA? Please?

naaaahhh.. forget those anesthesia books for now.. especially for the first semester or so.. you'll get what u need from class regarding that.. if u want to get a good jump/grip, go for pharm and physio.. always room for more !! amen to that.. more than you can care to want.. if you are REALLY craving an arduous bathroom reader, get all you can about calcium and its role... i learned VERY quickly it's not just for bones.. ENJOY !!!!!!!!!!

It's been 14 yrs since anesthesia school, but the one book that I know a lot are assigned is

Basics of Anesthesia by Robert K. Stoelting

Start with that and then come back.

Hey kukukajoo, here is a CRNA program book list. If you must read any of these prior to going to school, I would suggest Basics of Anesthesia(#20 on list). It provides a good overview and isn't too technical compared to the other books on the list. Most CRNA's, SRNA's consider it to be among the best intro texts. There you go, hope this helps.
