BMCC Spring 2011 hopefuls?

Published

I know this is kind of early but I just wanted to check if anybody plans to apply for the Spring 2011 nursing program at BMCC (Borough of Manhattan Community College) in NYC. I just met the preclinical advisor this week and he gave an update that CUNY eliminated the need for non-preclinical students (like me who's currently at liberal arts at BMCC) to first change their curriculum to preclinical before applying for the nursing program.

Here's an April 30 memo from the nursing department for anybody who wants to apply for the nursing program:

RE: Admission into the Nursing Program

Non-nursing student who want to apply to the Nursing program please note the following:

1. Admission into the Nursing program is based on the GPA in the four required prerequisite courses (Eng101, Psy100, Mat104 and BIO425) and the overall GPA for both the Day and Evening/Weekend Nursing Programs.

2. Students who want to apply for the Full-Time Day Program must wait one semester after completion of the four required pre-requisite courses to apply for admission into the Nursing program.

3. Students who work full-time during the day and want to apply for the Part-Time Evening/Weekend Program must wait one semester after completion of the following courses: ENG101, PSY100, MAT104, BIO425, BIO426, BIO420, and PSY240 or SOC100 in order to apply for admission into the Nursing Program.

4. Please be aware that admission into the Nursing Program is also based on seat availability. The College does not guarantee admission into the Nursing Program.

5. In order to advance into the Nursing Program, students must provide documentation for one of the following categories:

US Citizenship, Permanent Residency, and International Students with F1 status, Granted Asylum, Refugee Status, Temporary Protected Status, Withholding of Removal, Deferred Enforced Departure or Deferred Action Status by the US Government.

-------------

By the way, for those who are applying in late October for the Spring 2011 program, make sure to bring your advisement sheet and transcript if you took some prereqs outside BMCC. If you're applying for the evening program, also bring proof of your current employment.

I'm sooo excited to apply and can't wait for October!

Hi Dee!

Thank you so much for your help! This sounds pretty good, even though I'm thinking if it might be difficult to register for classes as a non matriculated student, since I'm guessing they give priority to matriculated students right?

At the moment I'm taking the writing and foreign language requirements at NYU and I'm definitely planning on staying there if I get into the nursing program. I will apply by October 1st and I'm feeling a bit nervous since I'm putting all my eggs in one basket (NYU). I think I will be devastated if I don't get in and I don't even want to think about it! I'm trying to do everything right, I'm studying really hard, I'm a straight A's student (for now!) and plus I'm doing weekly volunteering at a hospital every week....fingers crossed!!!

I will send in applications also to BMCC, CNR, Cochran, Hunter etc....just in case, hoping that I will get into one program at least!

Best,

Kika

Hi Dee!

I just joined allnurses.com when I saw this thread. :) I am also applying for the Spring 2011 evening program. I am so nervous! I already have my BS from Pace, and I had transferred into BMCC last year as a PCN major. I only have to take MicroBio this semester and then I am hoping to apply to the clinical section this October.

Silly question, but does the above letter apply to students already in the PCN program? Does this mean I can only apply to the nursing program next year b/c I am still taking MicroBio this semester? Sorry for these questions!!

Best,

Mel

Does anyone know if there are any housing locations in Manhattan other than Educational Housing Services? They want at least $18,000 per year and that's ridiculous. I cannot find any other housing. Any suggestions?

Hi Mel,

I believe that as long as you're already finished with Microbio by October then you can apply for the program. I wasn't able to apply for the Fall 2010 program since I was still in the middle of my Microbio when they started taking applications in March-May. I asked Mr. S if I still need to be in the PCN before applying (since I was in the liberal arts dept) and he said that CUNY doesn't anymore require students to be under a PCN major before applying for the program. They just want students to finish the prereqs first.

If you're just about to take Microbio this fall, then I am not sure if you'll be able to apply for the Spring 2011 program. But please verify with Mr. * first for this. Goodluck!

Dee

Hello everyone welcome to the team ...............

I just joined all-nurses.com when i saw this thread....i am also applying for the spring 2011 evening program..i kept calling and calling and they also kept transfering me but tomorrow morning i will go in the college to meet with the academic advisor.....wish me luck ./////im wondering did everyone have to pay a fee to apply for the college because today when i filled the application they were requesting 70 dollars for the application........i have an associate degree in medical assistance i hope its not so hard to het into nursing because today they told me ...there is no waiting list that i will take some testing and then go into the program........

Hi Elizabeth!!

Good Luck meeting your adviser! I hope they give you good news.

When I transferred into BMCC last year I did have to pay the $70 fee. I think that is the standard application fee. Have you taken all of your prereqs?

Best,

Mel

Hi Dee,

Thanks for the advice! I just spoke with Mr. *, and he said PCN majors can apply while taking their last class. yay!! So I have to make an appointment with him in October to sign up for Spring 2011. I hope we get in!

Mel

Hi Elizabeth,

Welcome to the site! If it's your first time applying to a CUNY school, then yes, they require a fee for the application. I hope you were able to read some of the past posts in order to prepare for application into the nursing program.

Have you already taken all of BMCC's nursing prerequisites for the evening program (Eng101, Eng201, Gen.Psych, Dev Psych or Sociology, Mat104, AP1, AP2, Micro)? The nursing department might also require for you to be a matriculated student for one semester first before being able to apply for the program so if this will be your first time at BMCC, then you might not be able to apply for the Spring 2011. Pls. ask the academic advisor to confirm that.

You also need to have all As in the first four prereqs Eng101, Gen Psych, Mat104, AP1, to guarantee that you will be able to get in. The evening program only takes around 30-35 students per semester and it's extremely competitive.

If you have any questions, let me know and I'll try to help. Goodluck tomorrow!

Best Regards,

Dee

Hi Mel,

That's great news! :yeah:Can you let me know when they're starting to take appointments? They usually do that in September but I have not been in BMCC for months so I'm not sure when they'll open Mr. * appointment book. Goodluck with the last class!

Hi Elizabeth,

For starters, here's the link for the BMCC nursing program. In order to apply for the evening nursing program, you need to finish the pre-requirement subjects (or their equivalent if you already took them at another school) which include Eng101, Mat104, Psy100, Bio425, as well as the general requirement subjects below. If you're applying for the morning program, you only need to finish the 4 pre-clinical requirements first to be able to apply.

Pre-Clinical Requirements:

ENG 101 English Composition I

MAT 104 Mathematics for Health Science 1

PSY 100 Introduction to Psychology

BIO 425 Anatomy & Physiology I

General Requirements:

BIO 426 Anatomy & Physiology II

BIO 420 Microbiology

ENG 201 English Composition II

PSY 240 Developmental Psychology4 OR SOC 100 Introduction to Sociology

SPE 100 Fundamentals of Speech 3 If you already took any or all of them, your academic advisor tomorrow will check your transcript and see if the subjects you already took in your old school will be transferable.

If you have not taken any or just some of these subjects, then they will place you as pre-nursing major. You will not be able to apply to the program unless you finish the requirements needed.

In the case that you already took any or all of the 4 pre-clinical requirements in your old school, make sure that you got an A for those. If not, tell your academic advisor that you don't want them to be transferred and instead you'll take them again at BMCC. I had a B+ on my English101 and I asked them to not transfer that. I retook Eng101 at BMCC and got an A.

I hope these answer some of your questions. I won't be able to check my email again until tomorrow morning but I'll try to respond asap if you have any other questions.

Best Regards,

Dee
