BMCC Nursing Program Spring 2018

Published

Hello Everyone,

Today we took the Kaplan Entrance Exam and I thought it would nice for us to share feedback and get to know each other as we wait for a phone call.

I found the reading and the math sections to be fairly easy while the writing section was confusing. Science wasn't easy but more manageable.

I scored 71% with 3.7 GPA for pre-req. It's on the low side but still hopeful

yes @milktea you need micro to graduate from the nursing program. micro isnt a pre-req but you would have to take it over summer break. i took a &p 1 and 2 with labs but you only need A&P 1. you have to take math 104 at BMCC to get into the nursing program. You need a writing intensive course and an english course. you need to take speech as a pre req also. and i dont know if it matters which psych class you take but if you took developmental psych thats good. my advice after having finished almost 2 semesters is to take ALL your pre-reqs NOW. you do not want to take summer courses because nursing school is hard enough. you need to review over the summer and prepare for the next semester. also we have assignments to do over the summer so you wouldnt want to interfere with your summer classes.

What course number is speech in BMCC? It's possible to enter the nursing program without finishing up pre-reqs?

If you retook a course (say like Gen Chem 121), is there a way to report your better grade?

Yes, If you retook chem you can use the better grade. The course is speech 100 and i think you also might have to take it only at BMCC, not sure. .. You must take all the prereqs. As i explained before nursing school is very challenging. You cant really take courses later. The only course you can take later is either microbio or writing intensive but not both. It will be very difficult to take those courses once nursing school has begun. Also you are competing against hundreds of other applicants so you would want to take all your prereqs for a fair shot. Nursing school is NOTHING like any other course, often very difficult . Get those As in your prereqs first before you decide if nursing school is right for you.

Hey, thanks for taking the time out of your day to answer my questions. You are so nice and helpful. I wanted to know if Chem 121 is actually even required for this program. If not, I probably won't spend time this summer retaking it :o I will most likely take the other ones like ANP 1 or MAT 104. How was ANP 1 at BMCC and who do you recommend me to take?

Thanks ^_^

Yes, CHE121 is required before you can take any of the science courses. I took A&P a few years ago and I recommend you just follow the syllabus and do the reading before class. I don't think I can leave names so send me and message and I'll leave you the two professors that I took.

HI!

I was wondering if anyone here is in the current evening program at BMCC for RN? I am trying to gauge the need for all these books, access codes they are recommending. I am told by some day program nursing students that they only utilized the nursing fundamental book. Never opened the concept mapping book or the nursing central access code. Any feedback? I don't want to waste $400 on something I am not going to utilize. Thanks!

Hi everybody,

Short question to all that went through the application process. Coming fall I am taking the last required pre-requs (A&P1 and MAT104). My question is, can I apply for the SPRING 2019 program without being done with all the pre-requs? As all of you know grades are usually not out before the end of December

Any help would be much appreciated.

What the girls replied in the other post is correct. You need to be enrolled at Bmcc.

Hey Kayla,

I didn't receive a bachelor's but I was attending another CUNY. I didn't do so well in certain science courses, and they have all been transferred over as Science electives on my BMCC transcript. They're not going to factor into my BMCC GPA, but the Nursing Dept. will still see those grades and their course numbers (BIO140, CHM220, etc) and I am afraid it will hurt my application.

You said something about not doing your best for your Bachelors...did ever talk to anyone in the Nursing Dept. about that? I contacted the Nursing Dept. and they said that they look at the pre-requisite GPA but that they will be able to see my grades from my previous institution.

If I do well in pre-requisite courses at BMCC, and do well on the Kaplan exam, I hope that I will be able to compensate for my subpar transfer grades. What are your thoughts? Thanks for your time.
