BMCC Nursing Program Spring 2018

U.S.A. New York

Hello Everyone,

Today we took the Kaplan Entrance Exam and I thought it would nice for us to share feedback and get to know each other as we wait for a phone call.

I found the reading and the math sections to be fairly easy while the writing section was confusing. Science wasn't easy but more manageable.

I scored 71% with 3.7 GPA for pre-req. It's on the low side but still hopeful

I am speaking from my point of view and everyone should hear different opinions. Everyone should investigate the program to make sure they are a right fit for it instead of wasting their time and money. Of course the program is challenging, thats not my point! You are stating the obvious. We know what nursing prepares us for and obviously it is a serious job!

Good for you that you graduated with a 3.92 GPA, slow clap. Professors can act differently depending on who they are dealing with. I have seen this many times and people have different experiences. You might believe she is wonderful, but others do not. It's ok to have a difference in opinion. I see your opinion throughout this thread..please allow others to speak. I didn't see any EMT's or medical assistants who dropped out or didn't pass.

There is no need to be rude or snide. You are perfectly entitled to your opinion just as I'm entitled to mine. Expressing my opinion/perspective on the points you brought up in yours does not prevent others from expressing theirs and offers a different take on the program. As I mentioned, I disagree with your comments but your opinion and perspective is neither less nor more valid then mine. Just different. It's okay to have different experiences and share them.

Mostly, I wanted to ensure that those without a medical background are not discouraged to pursue the nursing program at BMCC by sharing. As you said, everyone has a different perspective. For instance, in my class two medical technicians and one EMT either did not pass or eventually dropped out in my class.

I am not being rude or snide. You are contradicting yourself. If everyone is entitled to their opinion why are you so quick to disagree. It is an opinion based on my experience. You are trying to have a debate, while I am stating my experience. You are trying to point out all the things you believe are wrong in my statements. It is valid like you said. Why are you arguing? You just said its ok to share, but you are trying to dismantle my experience as if you know exactly how this program is going. Things change and people change.

No one is going to be discouraged. If you want to pursue a career you will. It is more than fair to alert people to information they will need before they make a decision. There are a lot of better programs out there. Also, most of the RN's and doctors I spoke to agree that having some medical experience can give you a leg up. I am not pulling that out of the air.

I have no idea why you even responded to my comments in the first place.

I suggest everyone again please do your research and don't just trust what people are telling you about ANY PROGRAM. Talk to people in the hospitals, volunteer and make sure you know what you are going into. In addition make sure you know who are the professors!!! Question everything!

I am not contradicting myself. I commented because I wanted to share my positive experience which contrasts with your negative one. You are getting defensive simply because I disagreed with you by having a different experience than you did.

Sharing different experiences provides different perspectives and more information for those who may seek it. My opinion as well as my experience are just as valid as yours. I would recommend to others that they research programs, compare and contrast reviews (both positive and negative), and speak with current students of the program in order to make a discerning decision. What is right for one person, may not be right for another, and there are various factors that may influence one person's experience of the program.

Anyways, as this is a BMCC Nursing Program thread that started off with posters who were hopefuls for the program and many of whom are probably now in the middle of their first semester, I want to wish everyone a positive and successful program! Keep at it, support one another, find laughter where you can (even if it's in the midst of finals delirium), and you WILL get through! Best of luck!

You already shared your experience and you graduated years ago. Defensive? LOL! I'm sorry, but whatever you say does not phase me at all. I have a voice and I am using it. Your experience is not up to date. If I was looking into a program I would also want to hear the negative experiences as well as postive to weigh my pros and cons.

You are saying the same thing I said. DO your research on all programs!!!Of course whats right for one is not necessarily right for the other.

Please stop replying to my posts.

For the record and so others do not discount my experience, I did not graduate "years ago." I graduated less than 2 years ago in 2016.

I have a voice as well, and you could stop replying to my posts with misinformation and assumptions about me that I then need to correct. For clarification, this is a thread which is a discussion and people post comments to add to the discussion. Anyone can comment with their thoughts, opinions, or contrasting experiences.

Hi@jengem55 how can i prepare for kat? Can you give me some study tips which book should i buy for this test

Hello!

I recently graduated from university and am looking into nursing programs. I am very much interested in the nursing program at BMCC. However, I have a lot of concerns and questions. I hope you guys would be able to help me.

I didn't do so well in university and my overall GPA was a 2.9. I was wondering if the nursing program looks at the GPA that you got from university or do they base the GPA on all the pre-reqs (PSY 100, MAT 104, BIO 425, ENG 101)? So say, you got all As in your pre-reqs, does that mean you would have a 4.0 GPA?

How about CHE 121? Is CHE 121 necessary? I took CHE 121 at my university and got a C+ and I was planning to retake it at BMCC this summer if I need it.

How about the KAT (Kaplan Admission Test)? How did you guys prepare for it? Did any particular test prep books/online tools help you prepare for it?

I need a lot of advice on this. Thanks so much guys! :)

Hey! You are in the right place if you did not have a great GPA from undergrad. First you have to be admitted to BMCC in order to get accepted into the nursing program. It is very easy to get into BMCC especially with a bachelor's degree. I also didn't have the best GPA but made up for it with my prerequisites. So that answers your question, you are science GPA and overall GPA will rise because you can choose which courses you want to add to your transcript that gets reviewed by the BMCC nursing program. The best preparation for doing well on the Kaplan is doing well in your prerequisites. You must make a decision to get straight A's in your prerequisite courses or maybe only one B. You must make a decision that you're not going to get your prerequisites to get into nursing school with mediocre grades. You have to try to figure out a way to change things. But on the bright side the teachers are very supportive especially when they see that you are trying. I I was working full-time while completing my prerequisites, and BMCC is the only part-time nursing school in all of New York City to allow you to still work full time. I wish you the best of luck. I have completed nursing 1 and as of May 22nd will complete semester 2 I love the nursing program. I promised my professor that I would help the future nursing students of BMCC. Not all. But if you have a desire to gain more information you can reply to this message. You can do this!

Hey! :) :) Thanks for your quick reply

Again, thanks so much for the help :')
