BMCC Fall 2011 Applicants - HESI A2

Published

Hello fellow BMCC nursing applicants,

Anyone applying for Fall 2011? They now require the HESI A2 (I believe the Spring '11 hopefuls didn't need HESI). Does anyone know what the percentages will be for prereq GPA/ overall GPA/ HESI score in determining the rankings?

I'm pretty worried now because I was hoping to boost up my overall GPA from 3.7 to above 3.8 this semester. But finals just passed, and I calculated my grades; I think my GPA is dropping to a ~3.63 because I might receive a C in my Microbio class. I'm considering emailing my professor and requesting some kind of administrative withdrawal instead of getting the C. If somehow I'm allowed the withdrawal, my GPA will become ~3.84. My prereq GPA is ~3.86 (2As, 2A-s).

BMCC is notorious for rejecting 3.8s, let alone 3.7s and lower. Should I rely on acing the HESI or should I contact my professor and hope I get the withdrawal? Or is there a possibility that a 3.7 this sem could get accepted?

Hey everyone,

Congratulations to all of those who have been admitted to the nursing division. I just started my time at BMCC, taking PSY100, CHE121 (with Professor Chen, who I LOVE), and SPE100 this summer. I will be done with the 4 prereqs by the end of this fall semester, so I hope to relax a bit in the spring semester so I can prepare for the HESI A2.

Is the HESI A2 difficult? I assume that the exam is only based on A&P I, not A&P II, right? Because day nursing students don't have to take BIO426 until after they get into the nursing division.

I'm on my way to getting an A in both PSY100 and CHE121 (although CHE121 isn't counted, but I want to make sure I have all As in case it goes to a tie-breaker situation). What does anyone recommend to get an A in A&P I and MAT104? I have ********* for A&P I and ****** for MAT104. Also, I'm worried about getting an A in ENG101 because some professors just refuse to give a straight A, especially in English courses. My English professor will be **********

Any advice will be great! And once again, congratulations to everyone who has gotten in the nursing division!

Hi JFVargas,

I don't see why you have to take a trimester off to prepare for Hesi. You can apply in November for Spring 2012 program.Hesi is not difficult. The easiest part is Math.Reading part is too long, but not too difficult. In Anatomy part some questions were unbelievably easy and some were too detailed. I think that taking AnatomyII could be useful but is not necessary. However, I have to admit that there were about 4 questions on the that I couldn't answer because we didn't cover the material.

My advice fore test is time management because many people in BMCC didn't get a chance to finish.

Focus on your grades because this trimester BMCC looked mostly at GPA.I have a fried who didn't finish Hesi so she got 0 for critical thinking, but she was accepted in the program because she had 4.0 GPA.

I was worried about ENG class too but you can get A if you work hard. And English is not my native language.

If you have more questions feel free to ask!

PS:I think that this site doesn't allow posting teachers names so youe message might be deleted.

I checked with the Head of Nursing dept (avoiding name here) and he said now they make you wait a semester to apply. So if you finish in Fall you have to apply and take Hesi in spring and apply for the following fall. Seems completely unreasonable, not sure if they will stick to it.

I don't think they stick with this idea. The message about waiting one semester was on bmcc website even one year ago,but I applied this trimester before i was done with all my prerequisites. When you will be taking the last prereqs go to the nursing advisor and talk with him.

Yes, I heard the same thing, that you have to take a semester break between finishing your 4 prereqs and applying for the nursing division. I'm actually going to apply for the evening section, so although I will have my 4 prereqs by the end of the fall, I still have to take A&P II, Dev Psych, and Microbiology before starting the nursing division. The day division applicants do not have to take those 3 courses before nursing classes begin. I'm taking Dev Psych and A&P II in the spring and Microbiology in the summer.

For those talking about finishing prereqs, are you referring to evening or daytime sessions?

Those applying in the daytime session have to sit out one semester after finishing the four main prereqs (A&P1, MAT104, ENG101, PSY100), while those applying for evening session have to finish all the other prereqs within the same semester they apply.

I had to sit out last semester (Spring '11) even though I finished the four prereqs in Fall '10 because of this rule. I think some people don't realize they're "sitting out" because evening applicants have to finish the other prereqs while daytime students don't. But believe me, I tried applying the same semester I finished the four prereqs, and they wouldn't let me near that application until I sat out the next sem.

I applied in March while I was taking the A&P I. I applied for day classes.I don't know why they let me apply.

@Zaika2686 Did they ask you if you had finished the prereqs before they let you apply? I have heard from others that they were allowed to apply the same sem they were finishing A&PI, but they had also been accepted into BMCC as "pre-nursing", and when I spoke to my counselor she said they fall under different rules as others who are applying. The website was incredibly confusing when they were updating it from the old rules to the current rules :|.

If you're not under pre-nursing, and you were still allowed to apply then that's awesome! I would've definitely taken the opportunity if they let me (I tried so many times to apply for the Spring, but they kept deferring it when they found out I was just finishing A&PI.) Perhaps you're right about this rule being phased out, and I was simply one semester too early for them to start it.

I'm okay with it now though, since I was able to finish all the other requirements and am now able to take other class for a different degree while taking nursing classes. And we (potentially) get to be classmates! So it all worked out for the best :)

Ok.Now it all makes sense.I was accepted at BMCC as "pre-nursing".Maybe we will be classmates!I'm hoping to register for morning class...the registration order is some sort of lottery,so we will see...

I registered for another class that I would be able to keep regardless of which daytime nursing class I get into. Both schedules are okay for me, but I also have higher preference for the morning schedule.

My main concern right now is getting CPR certified and paying for all those books! And also getting health insurance as I have gone a few years without any.

I think that CPR certification can be done in one day from 9 to 5.

There are a lot of books!I don't even know how much they cost...

I don't have insurance neither, but I'm not getting one. It's too expensive!I have to find a doctor to fill out the form and do all the blood tests.

I am applying for the evening section, so that's why I'm taking A&P II, Dev Psych, and Microbio in the spring and summer, so I will apply for the nursing division at the end of the spring semester, taking the HESI exam at the end of the spring semester.

The "one semester break" rule only applies to students who want to apply to the day division of nursing, not the evening division. But I guess that during the one semester break, the day applicants can just finish taking the other courses (A&P II, Microbio, and Dev Psych) so they won't be overwhelmed when they get into the nursing division.

I'm actually taking ALL of the courses before going into the nursing division (4 prereqs + ENG201, SPE100, PSY240, BIO426, and BIO420) and I'm actually also going to take MAT150 (Intro to Stats) and CHE122 (2nd semester of CHE121) before going into the nursing program. I just want to get these courses out of the way for when I eventually want to go for my BSN.
