blackpool victoria hosp or northwick park hosp?

Published

hi!

are there nurses here from the uk who are familiar with the two hospitals in the heading? blackpool victoria hospital in lancashire and northwick park hospital in harrow london. if you were to choose between the two, where would you work?what are the pros and cons? thanks very much!

It will be cheaper to live in Blackpool, but then you have access to London if you work in Harrow so that's a big plus. If you are in the ER in Blackpool you will spend all your time pumping drunken teenagers stomach's out all weekend... not so much in Northwick Park. It's a more suburban area not close to a party town. Weather in Blackpool can be bleak... but I think I'd choose it just to be by the sea.

Good luck with your decision. I'm jealous.

hi suethestudent! Yah, i'm thinking i might not be able to save in harrow as much as i could in blackpool. But then im also considering access to the city of london. now, im thinking which hospital could help me in my professional and personal growth. im also considering the hospitals' reputation. you've helped me a lot already with your reply. it's highly appreciated!:)

Specializes in Plastics. General Surgery. ITU. Oncology.

Don't choose Northwick Park. It has a very bad reputation and some serious incidents have occurred there.

It is my local hospital although I don't work there, never have and never want to.

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Hi! Thanks so much for those links. i have actually been doing a lot of researching on both hospitals and I have come across those nasty issues before plus the low ratings given by patients. I have also read the defense of the hospital. I will be doing a lot of thinking. Thanks again.:)

Hi. I am very familiar with Blackpool 'Vic'. (and have been since 1989). A very large and busy hospital. They are very much into ongoing training and education. A variety of patients as it is a major holiday resort and also a lot of people retire to the area. They are a centre of excellence for cardiac surgery. It has its faults but overall would be super experience.

It is very close to many lovely, scenic areas. i.e. The Lake District, Forest of Bowland, Yorkshire Dales. The nightlife in Blackpool is legendary! Being close to London is not important you know. The UK is a lot bigger than London. Those who live in the South tend to think we are all country bumpkins up in 'the North' - not so. There are vibrant areas within easy reach of Blackpool for shopping etc. Manchester is not far for example. Preston is good too.

Accommodation will be reasonably priced in the Blackpool area. Oh yes, the Hospital Social Club is great for a drink and cheap meal.

Wow! i have heard nothing but good things about blackpool.. seems like a really great place and the hospital seems really focused on their goal.. i wish there were no complications involved.. thanks madeleine!!

In response to inurse uk! Northwick park hospital is a good hospital that has been branded with a bad reputation for no obvious reasons. The clinical trials that were held here where a lot of people nearly died was due to a seperate company called paraxel. In fact if it wasnt for the doctors and nurses of northwic park hospital those people would be dead now! When it comes to maternity, the amount of maternal deaths was because women who are 9 months pregnant fly in asylum or as immigrants into this country with no word of English and land up at maternity expecting drs and nurses to read their minds!!! They have had no scans and dont know anything about their past medical history. I am so sick of people knocking the work that is done in Northwick park hospital. The abuse that is dished out is just appalling. The patients and public can be so demanding and aggressive. Yet these people show up at A&E with a cold and expect to be treated like royalty! Have a bit of compassion for the effort people make in saving lives! Funny how know one talks about the amount of lives SAVED here per year!!!!

This is incorrect. Of the 13 deaths, I believe that there was only one who presented at a very late stage. In addition, this woman expected to give birth in her own country, but was not allowed to fly back due to the airline regulations. I also believe that the vast majority of the 13 women who died did not require translation services.

In fact one of the 13 women who died was a nurse at Northwick Park Hospital itself!

This information is available freely and publicly available from the Healthcare Commission report and reputable national newspapers.

The quoted statements above would seem to be rather ill informed, and not made by a healthcare professional at Northwick Park (or anywhere else, one would hope!).
