birth control and pap HELP SCARED

Hello,

I have several questions about birth control and pap smears. I have researched for days on this, this site plus goggle. Anyways Background information on myself:

I am 21, I have been with my fiance for 2 yrs, we live together, no planning for kids (probably never, I fear being a mom, long story), graduating nursing school in may (so I know a little technical stuff about this but I will say not much). I heard health hx can affect bcp so the bigys I have are Chrons, mitral value prolapse, and heart mumur, ventricle sys. defect. Since nursing school, I have been getting acne from stress. Warning TMI, I have always never had regular periods, they are very heavy and clotty, bad cramps, however I dont get moody.

I have never really had a "scare" of not starting my period, until last month. So I have decided I probably need to be on bcp. Problem is I AM SCARED to dealth of the entire procedure. I have never had a Pap smear or anything, I know that is bad according to my age, I know I need to be checked for cancer, and etc. However, I am very shy.

What are everyones experiences? What questions should I ask my first time? What should I know about? The doctor is a women, I asked. I personally dont want my body to be judged. I know that might sound silly, but it is true.

Anyways I made a appointment to get put on birth control (big step for me); however, I don't know what type is best for me. After researching, I figure I probably will just have to test and find out which one works best for me. I honestly knowing myself pretty well, will forgot the pill, the shot (dep0-provera) seems like it has a lot of side effects, the NuvaRing personally sounds gross to me, not heard much on the shot Lunelle, and still keeping my options open about the IUD. Any suggestions? My fiancee said he is going to pay for it because I am in nursing school plus it is cheaper then a kid.

Basically help me, I know that I need to do this, but this is a big fear to me--- that I am ready to overcome. :crying2:

Thx Arwen_U , i totally forgot to write down warming up the speculum.

Once your the pt, its a totally different world. LOL

Does anyone have any advise about which type of birth control is the best? I understand that hormones will affect everyone different. How many different types do you usually have to test run to find the prefect type?

We'll be happy to give you all the support we can....however, this question is one we can't answer for you. This is something to talk about between you, your partner, and your doc. Like you said, everyone is different. It's outside our scope to answer this question for you.

Here is a link to some info that might help you in asking your doc questions concerning birth control:

I've been going to the same doctor for years (my PCP does my lady-parts exam) and have gotten to know her pretty well. I asked out of curiosity the last time I was there for a pelvic if she had seen any really, um, "interesting" things. She's seen several pierced labia, TONS of Brazilian wax jobs, and many tattoos. She said untrimmed pubic hair is the exception. She said the most spectacular tattoo was a dragon...she said it was absolutely a work of art, and done in such a way that it looked three dimensional. The dragon's mouth opened around the opening of the woman's lady parts. She said it was gorgeous and couldn't understand why someone would have that kind of work done in a place where people won't see much of it.

Hopefully!!!!

:smokin:

Anyway, I tell you all this because, frankly, her office is in a pretty swanky area of town, and her typical patients are older and pretty well set financially. Even with women like that, docs see ALL KINDS OF THINGS! You'll do great!

My first pelvic was at the age of 19. The doctor had a poster on the ceiling; it was a hippo with his front end in a river and his butt hoisted up on the bank. The caption read, "Relax. Everyone gets their ass in a sling once in a while."

How old should you be for your first appt? I am 20 and not sexually active. My mom says you don't need to go till your married (read sexually active)

18 years old or when sexually active, whichever is first. (Or if you're having problems, of course...pain, bleeding, irregular periods, etc.)

My mom thought that too, so I didn't go until I was 22, graduated college, and had my own health insurance. ;)

I was really scared of it too, but I was less nervous about it after I had seen a bajillion of them in the ER! ;)

A young woman needs to start seeing a GYN when she is 16 y/o. Chances are everything would be normal but there are times when they are not. Don't take chances with your life.

Oh, and one more thought...I always take my birth control pill right after I brush my teeth at night. If you tie it to another task that you always do daily, it makes it way easier to remember to take it, if you should choose to go on the pill.

Thanks both of you. I will talk to one of my other docs about talking to my mother about needing to go.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one!! I'm 27, not sexually active and I have my FIRST gyno appt next Thursday!! I'm SOOOO nervous!!! I finally did it b/c we brought my mom to the ER a month ago and she was diagnosed with lung cancer... she died two weeks later. That scared me. I also made a dermatologist appt and they found 3 suspicious moles. Just thought I'd share...
