BHSN-Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing Fall 2011

Started a new thread, since the other threads on this topic look like they are from last year.

Okay,

I just got my acceptance letter in the mail today!!

I was going totally mental with anxiety, checking this board several times a day to see when people were hearing back, compared to when they had applied and what their stats were. I was also very nervous about how I had done on the TEAS, so I wanted to post my info to help other people a little. Here are my stats:

I applied to the school January 4th, 2010. I took the TEAS January 23rd, 2010.

Previous BA degree in anthropology. I graduate in August of 2009 with a 3.46 cumulative GPA.

I took A&P I last fall, at Gateway: B

Developmental Psych: A

TEAS: 81.2% (mean national was 72.8% and the mean for the program 73.3%)

My adjusted individual scores were as follows:

Reading: 82.5%

Math: 82.2%

Science: 70%

English: 85.5%

In all my nervousness, I called two days ago and was told that I would likely hear back from the in school 4-6 weeks. Then I got my letter today, February 5th. For the record, my admissions essay was based on a CNA training course I took in the fall and I also think that having a previous BA really helped, especially in seeing past that nasty 70% in the science section of the TEAS.

Good luck and I hope this information was helpful, or at least of interest, to some of you!!

thor-maybe i will get to see you at orientation! i am at 1pm on the 29th!

Yeah, just started the accelerated program and already have the first test this coming Monday. At this point though, exams have just become commonplace and I’ve got a good flow going on so shouldn’t be too bad for the summer. Anyways more stuff: *SPOILERS ahead, if you don't want the magic ruined lol*

What to expect for orientation: You’ll meet with an academic advisor, financial aid, the Lippincott book representative, go on the tour of the building with a student (doesn’t matter you’ll get lost your first day anyways), order uniforms from a student, order other supplies from a student, and get updated on what you else you’ll need including: student nurse insurance, CPR certification, completed physical, yearly PPD, get information about the NSNA, acquiring parking passes, and how to get your student ID cards in August. Note on parking passes, its only $20 a month for students.

Books will be $600-700. Uniforms are about $100-150 each (order two). And if given the option, go for the cargo scrub bottoms. Extremely nice and plenty of room for stuff for clinicals. You can also order sweatshirts and tshirts if you’d like. And last theirs also some miscellaneous stuff you can get buy from the NSNA (all of which I’d recommend getting). We will also be having a raffle for free stuff including a set of books, uniforms, etc. So basically bring your checkbooks lol.

I know it all feels stressful especially since you don’t know exactly what to expect but I hope this all helps. I also do not yet know if they will do this at orientation but I know that the being of your academic year you have the option of having a mentor (basically a level II student to show you the ropes). We are all pretty good and can give you tips for exams, studying, teachers, and misc. if you decide to do that. Anyways good luck to you all and congratulations again.

And wannabe, yeah you'll see me there. Shouldn't be too hard to pick out, I'm the only guy orienting that day.

Th0r:

Thanks again for the extra info. It all helps so much. I think we are all very anxious to get this started, we eat up all the info we can get. We want to be Uber prepared I guess??? I am curious if some students found alternative means of acquiring the books. Does the school frown on that? Thanks again for the info, it is always helpful. Best of luck on that test coming up for you.

Well just wondering how everyones orientation went? Still waiting but applying other places too..... Congrats to you all

i dont think that any of us have had our orientations yet.. mine is the 29th and i think that others are the 24th. i will let you know how it goes though!! good luck on your applications! i heard back from BH about 2 weeks ago so hopefully you will hear something soon!!

I believe Wannabe is correct in that the first orientation day is next Thursday. I can't wait! I can't believe it is finally here… the days have been flying by. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

I really hope you hear back from BHSN soon! Have you looked into Uconn's program? They start in January, which isn't terrible. The tuition is pretty good too. Only thing with them is they have a couple different pre-req requirements. Worth a look though.

Any one else as excited as I am for orientation tomorrow?!?

I am super excited! BHSN here we come! At least for a few hours...

Lady bug

Good Luck with your orientation..... I am excited for you..

Thanks jdoll! I'll report back in, let you guys know how everything went.

Any word yet from BHSN? I would hope that they would at least call you whether good or bad. Have you tried calling the secretary to ask what the status is on the wait list? Do you know how many people are still on there?

i am sooo excited for you and i cant wait until next week for mine!! let us know how it goes! its so real now. WOOOHOOOO!!!!! :)

So orientation went well, apart from being stuck in the middle of a tornado just outside the nursing school and then dealing with no power (dark sweat box!) inside. We got to order our uniforms, books and some various supplies.

The book package for the first year only cost around $500, and you could use a credit card for that. We should receive them within only 2 business days!

We received a tentative schedule, but we will not know our assigned lab and clinical groups till we receive an email in mid-August. We will also get our summer reading assignment mid-August.

The uniforms aren't mailed out, we have to pick them up at the school on our first day of lecture. You have to buy the shirt and lab coat through the school since they are both embroidered, even if they don't fit properly. The pants are technically supposed to be purchased through the school, but you can get away with purchasing them elsewhere (thank goodness!). The XS were so big on me that i had to hold them up in order for them to stay on…lol! That could have easily turned into a disaster! Just be aware that if you are smaller than a size 4 you may have a problem with that.

I actually just realized that I never received a tour of the school building. Probably due to the lack of power, it would have been too dark in the lecture room anyway (it is in the basement).

Umm… that's all that I can think of for now. If you guys have any questions, let me know. :)
