what is 'Best Shift' and/or 'Area of Nursing' to be in for Single Moms?

My question is regarding single mothers......If you work in the hospital, what shift have you found to be the best and how do you work it out? who's taking care of your child when youre working?

Also, is the hospital the best place for single mothers to be or is there another area of nursing more suited for us??

Thanks!

I dont think summer child care would be difficult to find, I just assume my child would go to a daycare or a day camp during the day. My biggest concern is finding quality night childcare.

School nurse does sound perfect if it werent for the mediocre salary. I am my daughters only financial support system so I need to make much more than a school nurse. I need to be at $60K minimum. Im in NY so hopefully that wont be too hard.

12 hour shifts 3 days a week, but really,it all depends on the ages of the kids and your child care situation.I currently work mornings because I want to be home when my kids get home from school but when they were under 5 I worked overnights..which I loved....

cuteazz1,

when you say you work mornings for your school aged children so you can be home when they get home from school, what shift is that? and that is 3x a week?

My child will be entering kindergarden when I graduate with my ADN....

I work night shift, which is very convienient for me. My mom will come over and stay two days per week at most to take my child to school. If it is a weekend, I bring my daughter to my mom to make it easier for her since we don't live very close by. I am able to pick my child up from school everyday, do homeowrk with her while cooking dinner and be to work ontime. I do not live close to my job but some who do are able to take their kids to school as well.

olivia28,

thanks for your post...that is exactly why Im leaning toward the night shift, I want to be there to see my child off to school and back and make dinner and do homework with them. You said your Mom watches your child 2x a week, isnt night shift 3 12hr shifts??

Also, Ive been looking at different hospital websites online to see what job openings they have and I didnt realize that 'night shift hours' werent universal. I thought they were 7pm-7am, period. Im seeing that some are 8p-8:30am, etc .. As I said, Id like to bring my child to school so I would hate to get the one that ends at 8:30am

Long term care generally pays better and once you establish yourself there, it probably won't be hard to work up to a managerial position with more flexible hours.

treehuggerRN,

forgive my ignorance, Long term care is what?, nursing home?

No, LTC is usually post-hospitalization patients or patients coming out of rehab who are not yet ready to be fully discharged to home and need continuing care. There are different types of long term care, some acute and some not. I don't know a whole lot about it, but from discharging patients to LTC facilities, that is the types of patients they seem to take.

Home care. It's been so great as a mom. Start around 8am, done by 5pm, but if you are with a good agency you could arrange to be done by 2 or 3 pm. You are paid per visit (I am). Pay is good. Weekends off. It's not hard to arrange pt visits to go to a school program or kids dr. apt. Really has been ideal for me.
