Best schedule for single mother

Nurses General Nursing

I recently became a single mother with two small children and one entering kindergarten. I have limited support from my friends and live near no family. I've been a stay at home mom for two years until now. My primary nursing experience has been the OR and PACU. Contemplating taking a weekend double job in Long Term Care facility or deciding on m-f job at hospital in PACU. What hours are the best option to give me time with my children and move forward in my career? Anyone out there working or worked weekend only job? How was it?

I'm also going to ask what is your custody arrangement and who is paying the health insurance? This will help my answer since I used to be a single mom.

If you can manage to land a M-F job in PACU, that would be your best bet.

I'm not a single mom, but my husband travels frequently, so I need to have work hours that coincide with daycare hours. Daycare is expensive, but it's less expensive than hiring a nanny.

While working doubles on weekends for free weekdays would work for you younger kids, you'd really miss out on your time with your kindergarten child. Once they start school, the weekends are really the only time you have a good uninterrupted stretch to do fun things with them.

I disagree. For her need, she would only hire the nanny part time (about 3 days/week) so it may be cheaper or same as daycare. And if she goes the daycare route better hope it's open very long hours because you all know nursing schedule. I worked in a daycare and don't think it's good to keep kids in daycare too long daily because they get bored and miss parents and home.

I work in the Operating room and I have 3 kids.I work weekends now since I have my husband to watch them during week. But when my husband travelled I worked week days and send them to day care .I would think it's ideal to work week days when you have more opportunities like day care ,nannies etc.I would not rely on one person,it's hard I have been through.I would put them in day care and also have a nanny PRN just in case kids gets sick.I worked three 12 hrs shift in the OR so I had 4 days with my kids .

It's now been set to every other weekend and I have insurance since my soon to be ex doesn't want to get insurance for the children.

Definitely doable
