Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello , i want to start the nursing program this fall if possible. I haven't took my prerequisites yet and the problem I'm having is that I can't decide what school is good or not. I'm confused with different opinions I've heard about some schools and it sound like all of them have a long waiting list. Do anybody have any recommendations ? Also I'm thinking about 4 years universities vs college since you have to wait anyway to get in. What are good universities around here (atlanta, ga)?

HELP please!!!

I will greatly appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

With no pre-requisites started and the fact that most schools have an acceptance deadline of April or May for the fall semester your chances of starting nursing school in the fall are rather low. Do you want an ASN, BSN? Do you have any previous college credits? Have you spoken with admissions or academic advising at any school in your area...

You will have to decide what your goals are. I did my pre-reqs first. Then went LPN, RN, BSN all from different schools. That could be considered the long way. Some choose to do a 4 year program and run straight through to the BSN. Mine was definitely longer, but more relaxed. Get ur prerequisites done first.

Agreed with JustBeachyNurse.

The chances of you getting into a nursing program this fall without any pre-requisites completed is very very unlikely.

Every nursing program (that I know of) has several pre-requisite classes that can take anywhere from one semester to three or four to complete before you can even apply. Plus, chances are that you have already missed the deadline to apply to any Fall 2015 starts by this point.

As for what is a good school, you'll need to do some research on that since we are not all from GA. Google is a great tool for looking these things up. Just look for nursing programs and see what you find. Most college/university sites will also have a cost column so you can estimate how much it would be, and they'll have pre-requisite requirements, entrance exam requirements, etc.

Forget about starting this fall in a nursing program, it isn't going to happen. Those who are starting this fall have an excellent GPA and all their required courses completed, have done well on entrance exams and application/essay/interview processes to have earned those seats in a nursing program, and they submitted all their credentials/applications a month or more ago. You aren't there yet.

Your FIRST stop is to decide if you want an Associate degree or BSN, then look at the schools that offer those degrees and see what their criteria is for acceptance. You have to do this yourself, first and foremost, before even thinking of the rest.

Once you have a list of pre-requisite courses to complete prior to being considered as an applicant for a nursing program, see how long that will take: most commonly it's a year, year and a half, sometimes if you need it, two years.

Once you have a GPA from those courses on a transcript, THEN you take entrance exams to see if you qualify as a candidate for enrollment in the program you desire.

But for now.......decide what degree, decide what school(s) and find out what courses you need to do first. You're thinking much further down the road than you should at this point.

It sounds like you really want to start nursing ASAP, and I really do understand that. I really do. Once you figure out what you want to do, it's hard to wait. But you need to wait. You have a lot of research to do and a lot of course work to complete before you apply to any nursing program.

Here are things to consider:

1) Is the school nationally accredited? This is important. Without national accreditation, your credits may not transfer to other schools.

2) What is the school's NCLEX pass rate? You want to make sure you don't go through years of school only to find that your school has not prepared you for NCLEX.

3) Are hospitals in your area hiring ADN RNs or just BSN RNs? This will determine whether you should go straight for BSN right away.

The pre reqs I had to complete before applying to my program were Chemistry, Biology, Algebra, Speech, English, Anatomy and Nutrition. Some also require Micro and Statistics.

Take this summer to do your research, figure out what pre reqs you need to take and get started on those.
