Bergen Community College Nursing Program Question

Published

Last Thursday I was at the college for the purpose of collecting my Chemistry grade with some classmates. Apparently, there was a graduation ceremony for RN's going on that night as well, and my friends started talking to one student to ask her about the program. I didn't hear the entire conversation, but one of my cohorts told me the student had stated that ELEVEN people had failed out of NUR-181 alone during her course!

Now, there's always a chance there was some sort of misunderstanding or miscommunication, but does this sound right? For what it's worth, I would think the application process and competitiveness of getting in to the program would assure a strong student population, so it makes me nervous to hear these things. I already received some insight from someone privately, but I was wondering what the public population made of this info.

Thanks!

Well, the person that told me that 97 was the cutoff for the '09 class took the HESI A2 last year. But again, she either a) was misinformed or b.) was a hater. LOL.

Really, for Biology, there is nothing you can do besides read the most random facts that you can find that are as minorly related to any science as possible(think Alchemy, lol) and cross your fingers that those facts will be on there LOL.(The only thing I would say is worth knowing well(like down to minute details) is cell reproduction). For Vocab, know all the words in "the book". I would say about 8 of them were on there which is a lot considering the English language has like, 30,000 words(I'm guessing lol). The rest was cake.

To prep for Chem, review your CHM100 notes if you took it. If you haven't, take it with Tscherne. She is the toughest little cookie on the planet but the only reason I remembered enough to get a 96 on that part was because she tested us on every detail...Good luck next year, and if I get in, you can have my HESI book if you like, it's all highlighted, but really the only part worth knowing is the Vocab anyway:)

Hi Moojie! I took Tscherne for Chem too. I agree she was tough but I learned a lot. Do you think if I review my notebook from her class and old tests it will prepare me enough for the Chemistry section? Also, do you have any advice as to a book to review for the Bio?

Guys I really appreciate your help will all my questions. Wow so for the evening program I will have to leave work by 3 which is really early. For the person that work in NY, do you drive to Bergen? Or just do bus? If I opt for Saturday clinicals will they be given to me if available? what I ask is -if I ask for Saturday clinicals will I get Sat clinicals only? Its very risky to have a full ime office job and go to nursing school I see. HUMC would be perfect. how far has anyone travelled for clinicals? GRADES ON HESI???

The 3p time worked for me, based on the bus schedule, where I parked and the location of the clinicals. I had to plan this all out. There was one clinical rotation that I needed to leave at 230p....I take the bus back into NJ and then drive to BCC or Clinicals from where I park. My job is approx a 20min train ride to Port Authority. The latest bus to NJ I caught to make it on time was a 345p. the bus is usually a 30-40min ride to my car.

I have done clinicals at Valley (Ridgewood), Ramapo Ridge (Wyckoff), St Joes (both Wayne and Paterson) and HUMC.

Not sure what is going to be made available to you.......but I had a semester where they even offered an all day Thursday clinical...which was out in at St Joe's , Paterson. I took Vacation and Sick days to do this.

All I can suggest is that you speak wtih the Profs about your challenges and the need to have a particular clinical schedule. They will usually to to work with you. USUALLY, not always.

Making it ontime was a bit challenging I cant lie......and there was no way I could have done this without a car.

There was an incident at Port Authority once. All buses and trains were stopped. I had to take a cab from Port Authority to NJ. and since the bus had stopped, the cab drivers took advantage of the opportunity. I had to pay $85 to make it to my car...so that i could make it to clinicals ontime.

I can tell you about another time where it rained....and my subway line was cancelled. I had to walk to Port Authority because half of manhattan was taking cabs.

My point to all this is that you will experience some challenges commuting...its inevitable.

oh and Lastly, yes, i did jeopardize my job because of the Nursing program (leaving early, vacation/sick days...etc) but the good thing is, i didn't fail out or else all that sacrifice would have been for nothing.

If you want it bad enough...you will make it work.

To DaddyO.....

Where did you do your externship? what hospitals? I've been trying to apply and they want BSN programs students only not AAS..Im in level 3 now, How was level 3 for you? and what can I expect for level 4, is it any easier than the other levels?

The hospitals that I know of accepted resumes with a December deadline. Not sure if there are any still taking resumes. My friends and I heard back from the recruiters by the end of January. But you don’t need an externship ….you can apply as a CNA too. And yes…there seems to be a trend where many of the hospitals are requiring the BSN. IMO this does not mean it’s a done deal.

All levels were challenging to me. Not overly difficult, but still challenging nevertheless. Level 3 Psyche was very interesting because I did not think I would like dealing with Psyche patients, but I found this area very interesting. Level 3 Maternity was not my favorite. I did very little in clinical, since the Husbands/boyfriends and even the Moms did not want a man to care for them. Peds was cool. Exams in Level 3 were bananas. One of the exams we took had something like 17 ATA questions (Mult/Mult).

Level 4 was not easier…and I found NUR 291 to have a little more work involved than NUR 290. So I would suggest taking NUR 291 first.

I am in Level I with Earl (hi Earl :) ) and I too work in NY. Like Daddy-O said, you will encounter transportation issues. I take a train to Port Authority then a bus to Jersey pick up my car and off I go to school. It's tough and the train/bus is not always on time.... On our very first day the Nursing Program Coordinator (i think that's who she was) explained how clinicals would work. She stated: We are competing with other nursing schools and sometimes clinicals will vary; you may start earlier than 5:30pm or it will be all day on a given weekday or the weekend. They can not give us a day or time that we want if it's not offered. They hope to accommodate us but sometimes they can't. She clearly stated that if we can't go to clinicals when it's offered then we can't continue in the program. Scary, huh? I work full-time but if I need to chose, school will be my priority. You will need to make sacrifices. I haven't started clinicals yet so I don't know how far I will travel. As far as the HESI scores go, read the other threads. Many students posted their scores; others don't want to post them. But FYI, study hard. The higher you get the better chances you have of getting in. As per the Nursing Coordinator (again, if that's who she is ) there is no cut-off score and no waiting list. It's the top 80 students (although, we had only 75 students this semester) One girl who scored a 97% and another girl 83%-they both got in this semester. In my opinion, if you score >than 90% you're pretty much in. BUT THAT'S JUST MY OPINION. You have to consider the average of the students who are taking the test with you. I was in your shoes and I appreciated any advice, suggestions, recommendations anyone provided. If you have other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Good Luck!!

Mon/Tues are lecture days (610p - 930/10p)....and Weds/Thurs are Clinical days (530p - 10/1030p). Now they make an all day Thur or Sat clinical available.... this will free up time to study/do homework. No class/clinicals on Fridays.

not sure wat you should do about deferring.

it seems crazy....but its doable. Like i said early, you will just need to plan everything out.

On the bus ride to work....I read. Commuting home...I read. You will become one with your notes. I always had them with me.

Alrighty, Level 1/sect 601, just found out our clincal assignments. Mine is on Thur/Fri 5:30+ Valley Hosp ( at least I have a rest day on Wed nights) We also have a group that is doing only Thurs 1-9 ( something like that), 2 groups of Wed/Thurs 5:30+, and 1 group of Wed/Thurs 4:30+, I forgot which hospitals (Hackensack or Valley) they are going to.

Wow....Thurs/Fri clinicals ?

I did the Thurs 1-9 at St Joe's, Paterson before for Maternity. Was able to see a few babies born which was incredible. The Dr allowed us to be front and center.

At Valley I had Prof Meyer. Definitely one of the best.

Good Luck !
