Bergen Community College Nursing Program Question

Published

Last Thursday I was at the college for the purpose of collecting my Chemistry grade with some classmates. Apparently, there was a graduation ceremony for RN's going on that night as well, and my friends started talking to one student to ask her about the program. I didn't hear the entire conversation, but one of my cohorts told me the student had stated that ELEVEN people had failed out of NUR-181 alone during her course!

Now, there's always a chance there was some sort of misunderstanding or miscommunication, but does this sound right? For what it's worth, I would think the application process and competitiveness of getting in to the program would assure a strong student population, so it makes me nervous to hear these things. I already received some insight from someone privately, but I was wondering what the public population made of this info.

Thanks!

You will definitely need a drug book guys. Not so much the Calculate with Confidence, unless you are really really REALLY bad with basic math. You get three chances to pass the calculation test before clinical starts. But the content is simple. If you can do the Math on the Hesi, you can do the Math in Pharm too:)

I think I'll invest in that book.. My math is a bit sketchy , so if it gives me practice then I'm in. I'm aiming to pass every test the first time around;)

I purchase my 4 books at amazon. I'm guessing the ones I purchased are the main books. I'll wait until class to see which others books are recommended by the profs. The total was $219 shipped

Physical / Health - Jarvis 5th ed (hardcover) $65

Calculate - Gray - 5th ed (paperback) $56

Pharm - Key - 6th (paperback) $45

Fund of Nur - Potter - 7th ed (hardcover) $53

bought those two so far, also from amazon.. Sign up for amazon student account you get to save a couple dollars on books, plus free shipping on most texts (if you choose standard two day)

I bought from amazon because there's no tax and the free shipping. I figured to buy them now so that I can start reading right after this semester. Plus I have something to do because wifey will drag me with her while she does the xmas shopping. The next 3 weeks will be crazy for me because of my devel psych, mircobio and scuba exams.

Earl M... Excellent idea! Definitely start reading earlier if you can. Our first exam was on 21 Chapters! Read Culture, Vital Signs, the chapters on the Nursing Process, Infection Control, Safety, Ethics, and Chapters 1-5. That should keep you busy lol. The others I wouldn't recommend reading until you are more into the program;)

which book are these topics/chapters from?

what????? say it ain't soooo ..lol geeez they lay it on thick huh?

@ missmone:: Moojie and I are in the same section right now and our first test of the semester (for the concepts class) covered around 24 chapters and then there were a few others that weren't assigned but the subject matter was discussed in class so technically they should be read. It's MADNESS! That first month or so was a little overwhelming!

Those chapters are from the Fundamentals of Nursing book.

And I want to add that it gets easier as the semester goes on. It's just the first month, like ukgirl said, is bananas. By the sixth week or so you will be able to complete your video validations faster, know what to look for when you're reading and studying notes, in addition to having a lighter work load:) the best thing you can do is "tune" into the semester asap. Hit the ground runnin so they say, lol.

Agreed Moojie. The beginning of the semester seemed like an impossible feat but then somewhere in there it all of a sudden falls into place. There is less reading once clinical starts, which was a huge relief for me. There are more exams towards the end of the semester but by that point a lot of the material is reoccurring so it's not as stressful.

Thanks for the heads up ukgirl & moojie.. much appreciated :-)
