Bergen Community College Nursing Program Question

Published

Last Thursday I was at the college for the purpose of collecting my Chemistry grade with some classmates. Apparently, there was a graduation ceremony for RN's going on that night as well, and my friends started talking to one student to ask her about the program. I didn't hear the entire conversation, but one of my cohorts told me the student had stated that ELEVEN people had failed out of NUR-181 alone during her course!

Now, there's always a chance there was some sort of misunderstanding or miscommunication, but does this sound right? For what it's worth, I would think the application process and competitiveness of getting in to the program would assure a strong student population, so it makes me nervous to hear these things. I already received some insight from someone privately, but I was wondering what the public population made of this info.

Thanks!

I was looking at my professors for the clinicals (sect 601) and one of them has a Hackensack University email. I guess that's where my clinicals will be.

which Prof ?

Mine has an Englewood Hosp email, but our clinicals are in hackensack.

I have listed is a Prof. Finnery. Maybe both hospitals are associated with each other. The rest of my prof have Bergen emails.

I was looking at the professors listed for each section..I'm in sec. 602;

There's prof. Kelly for Physical Assess; prof Cyriax for Pharmacology; but there is a list of about 4 or 5 professors for basic concepts and skills ( who aparantly do lecture & lab interchangably?) ...

DO we get a choice of who we want for that class? I assume that's where clinicals come in.

I looked at the school schedule and spring break is from 3/21/11-3/26/11. I guessing there are no clinicals that week. I hope so, I plan to catch up on my studying that week.

Prof Kelly is one of my favorites....she's part of the Nursing Club and make sure you join it too.

Unless things have changed, you will be told which Prof you have....we were never given the option to choose.

oh o.k.. I'm sure we will be told who our professors are. Funny thing is I was browsing the rate my prof site.. and there are a couple prof, well one in particular, for whom the complaints were consistent on how they handled their clinicals.... so basically just have to keep fingers crossed it's not THAT professor I get paired with hehehehe..:o

that sounds like an ideal plan.. partying days are over for us!!:)

what exactly do we do in clinicals as first semester nursing students? i have no experience in the medical field and i'm quite worried. do we have to measure blood pressure, heartbeat, etc? what exactly do we do?

Hi, in my first level of clinicals, we had to do vitals, give bed baths (make sure the patient is safe at all times), write nurses notes on our assessments. You will be given a patient and you go to the file and find the meds- find out all about the meds and then you will have to do a care plan on a patient also you have to do 2 process recordings. You will have pre and post conference to discuss everything...FishermanIV

i'm assuming we do learn all of this before clinicals right?

how long does it last? do we wear our white uniforms?

HI, you will learn or should have learned all of this is fundamentals. ( I'm not sure if you started classes yet) you will wear your uniforms, name tags, have a stethoscope, pen light, black pens, white shoes. With the right clinical instructor they will walk you thru the process. You will not be left on your own. IMO when you get to the clinical site, work as a team..if you need help- ask a friend, and if you have time help someone else. Get to know the nurses well. Ask them questions about what and why they are doing things..if you don't ask-you won't learn...also, don't chew gum, don't use your cell, be as helpful as possible and you will be amazed at what the nurses are willing to show you..FishermanIV
