Bergen Community College Nursing Program Question

U.S.A. New Jersey

Published

Last Thursday I was at the college for the purpose of collecting my Chemistry grade with some classmates. Apparently, there was a graduation ceremony for RN's going on that night as well, and my friends started talking to one student to ask her about the program. I didn't hear the entire conversation, but one of my cohorts told me the student had stated that ELEVEN people had failed out of NUR-181 alone during her course!

Now, there's always a chance there was some sort of misunderstanding or miscommunication, but does this sound right? For what it's worth, I would think the application process and competitiveness of getting in to the program would assure a strong student population, so it makes me nervous to hear these things. I already received some insight from someone privately, but I was wondering what the public population made of this info.

Thanks!

Did anyone sign up for the CPR class that is being held in Wayne this coming monday 11/29 at 6:30pm?

Does anyone know a good stethoscope to get and where?

Hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving!

I have a Littman steth that I love, but I am unsure how much it cost because it was given to me as a bridal shower gift from my (now) husband's aunt who is a nurse.

Anything less than 12 hours is considered part-time, I'm not sure how financial aid works with that...maybe since you are enrolled in a degree-seeking program?

As for the uniforms, I'm glad I got the jacket....I have taken it off a few times but I wear it almost all day and so do many of my clinical ppl. BUT, that is just my experience, maybe some hospitals are warmer than others =)

I bought the bandage scissors and have used them twice, I think they are worth having for clinical...but you don't need to buy them now. You can grab them at a CVS or Rite Aide whenever you decide you do or don't want them!

Is it possible to work full-time during the day and go to classes at night for evening program and still do well?

I'm sure someone who is in the night program will chime in and have a better idea than me, since I am in the day program ;-)

BUT (since I'm here anyway!) I will say that I remember ppl on here saying that they work full time and do it - so it can be done. I personally can't imagine it, but I think since I don't work full time, I have "grown into" the time I have to study and so forth. We (ppl in general) have a way of rising to the occasion when something is important to us...so IF you have to work full time while you go to school, then you make it work.

Honestly though, if you can avoid it, I would. IF you can avoid it. I know that isn't always realistic.

Is it possible to work full-time during the day and go to classes at night for evening program and still do well?

I work in New York (i am mentioning this because of the 1.5hr commute from my home to my office) Mon-Fri and I work weekends as a CNA/Student Nurse (usually 7-330a....some weekends from 7a-7p) and attend the evening program. The weekend gig started over the summer. during the week, i leave my home at 445-5am....and do not return until after 1030pm....and somedays well after 11pm because of clinicals. this is why i always tried to get a clinical prof that didn't keep us to the very end. some will allow you to leave at 9-930pm.

Make sure you eat healthy and take full advantage of any downtime you find. I can't stress this enough for those that work and are doing the evening program.

it's doable but the GPA has dropped to a 3.2. I need to maintain this because I start classes in January as a non Matric student at UMDNJ for the Master's in Nursing program which requires a 3.0. Not going to get the BSN going straight for the Masters.

So yes, you can do well. You can do anything you want. it may come with some discomfort, but the discomfort will only be temporary.

for the newly accepted students in the evening program:

did your letter include 2 envelopes or just the green envelope. I know we need to mail in the acceptance/decline form, but do we mail it in the green envelope? how about for the health forms? I think we have more time to get the physical and examination done, so in what envelope do mail these in? or can we just hand these in personally?

I have not been to the doctor yet for the checkup and vaccinations so it will take time, but for the acceptance letter, can we hand in personally? where do i hand it in? to the secretary in b302 or health office?

A lot of my stuff was handed in by hand, just FYI.

EVERYTHING goes to the secretary (Angie) EXCEPT the Physical Exam/Dr./vaccinations stuff....those go to the Health Office and once they have all your info then they will give you a letter stating that you have met all the requirements, that you THEN take to Angie.

And be sure that you only give Angie COPIES of your /personal insurance/CPR stuff -- keep your originals.

ukgirl,

how long did it take you to finish getting the vaccinations etc?

I went to the doc and they looked at my vacination history (from my pediatrician in Kentucky), did physical exam, gave me the TB test and Tetenaous shot, then sent me to Quest Diagnostics for my Titers blood work. I was able to get it done in one day, just had to go back to pick up the paper work.

A few other students had to go a couple times, but I'm not sure why?! Maybe they needed additional vaccinations...not sure.

I went to a "walk-in" type place that I go to for random things because I don't have a primary family doc up here yet, and I still didn't have any problems. AND, I'm 29 and couldn't even remember my last shot...it was much more turn key" than I expected it would be once I actually tracked down my vaccination records!

did you bring your old vaccination records with you to your new doctor?
