Bergen Community College Nursing Program Question

Published

Last Thursday I was at the college for the purpose of collecting my Chemistry grade with some classmates. Apparently, there was a graduation ceremony for RN's going on that night as well, and my friends started talking to one student to ask her about the program. I didn't hear the entire conversation, but one of my cohorts told me the student had stated that ELEVEN people had failed out of NUR-181 alone during her course!

Now, there's always a chance there was some sort of misunderstanding or miscommunication, but does this sound right? For what it's worth, I would think the application process and competitiveness of getting in to the program would assure a strong student population, so it makes me nervous to hear these things. I already received some insight from someone privately, but I was wondering what the public population made of this info.

Thanks!

Hey all you section1 students, we will be in room C313 next Wednesday (@ 8AM). Thought I'd share that in case you don't see it when you pick up your nursing kits!!

Say Hi to Professor Hayes.....GOOD LUCK TO ALL in section 1. She's a great teacher, but pay attention and do all the reading cause you never know what she is going to ask on her tests...Ps . For extra credit Ask her what the first nurses were called ?

Good luck to all on section 1.

Is anyone starting section 2 or have been there already and could give us a heads up on what to expect? We are having prof. Temmi and Fresolla.

Thanks.

Professor Timme is fun, you will have a great time. DOCTOR Fressola is a very serious person...some times the 2 of them argue in front of the class, but don't cross Fressola. Dont be late 4 class....

Level 2 Cardio/REsp = I had Prof Kelly and Meehan. make sure you understand the ABG's...this thru a few people off for the exam. IMO the exams where fair. Prof Meehan, is not up on technology so she will give you the lecture handouts. Prof Kelly is more tech savy and you will have to print the lecture notes off WEBct like always. Kelly's lectures don't usually run to late...MeeHan's will. But both ladies are the best....Prof Meehan will suggest that you can call her Jane or Queen Jane. We lost a few people in CArdio.

Timme/Freesola GI/GU: Great Profs IMO, with strong personalities. Timme is out of Valley and Freesola in HUMC. You will have a group project that will be presented to the class. 4 exams with the last being cumulative. Class is usually over no later than 9pm.

Dont be late for class or Clinicals. make sure your clinical uniform is on point and you have a name tag and ALL white shoes/sneakers.

Thanks guys!!!:)

@DaddyO

How much the books helped you? Im trying to read whatever will help me.

Im not sure how the they want us to learn..What tools were more effective in your opinion? Books? Evolve? NCLEX books?

Thanks

I applied for the EVENING nursing program and I just got an email saying I passed my background check and I should prepare for the HESI A2 exam. I need to take math, bio, chem, vocab, grammar, reading comprehension. The email says there's a practice study guide in the library.

It's been over 5 years since I graduated and I don't remember anything. I only have a MONTH left until the exam.

Can anyone tell me HINTS? will the book in the library help? please help me

The book in the library will most likely be the one from the company that makes the test. The vocabulary section is good, and If you are not good in Math, that section might be helpful as well. That being said, it is only 35 pages long or so. I recommend brushing up on your basic Bio and the Chem from Chem100 if you took it. There are online tutorials from "khan academy" on youtube that helps with the bio section...but honestly I found some of the questions on the exam have a little to do with Microbio and other random science- related, but not "classical" Biology-related stuff. Really, don't rely on the book for any of the science sections. Take the topic they recommend and expand on them when you are studying. I am a visual learner so I think YouTube is a great resource. Know the cell really really well and the phases of reproduction down to minute detail. Reading comp is one of those things where you either get it or don't... But I am sure going through some of the questions in the book is a good use of your study time. Good luck!

Unfortunately, I am going to have to say all of the above. I am big on cross referencing information and will usually use more than one medium. I read the books, but I was big on doing the NCLEX questions because I didn't come from a Healthcare background. I come from a financial background. so i needed to understand what made sense from a healthcare/nursing point of view and the NCLEX questions provided the more practical understanding. I know some students that got by with just working off the lectures notes and the NCLEX. One classmate told me she would just sit down at the computer with her lecture notes and look everything up that was not totally understood. She would couple this with the NCLEX 4000 (you can get this from Amazon.com) and she did fine. You have to find out what works for you....if you don't understand something...please go speak with the Prof asap.

Not sure what your section were told, but my section didnt find out until Level 3 about some type of Prof/Student thing where you are able to seek extra help. I believe this kicks in after the first exam. So if you are not pleased with your performance.....seek this out.

Like many here, I too was excited about being excepted into the program. Hundreds applied at the time and I made the cut. But I will tell you, that was the easy part. The program is no joke. My friend Cinqui started this thread and she too will tell you the same. Read the earlier replies by Jjlaman, he was the one answering most of our questions then. but he explained that roughly 25% of the class will fail. I think we lost about 1/3 of the original students I started with. and in the evening program, if you don't make it..you have to wait 1yr to try again. if you fail again...your out the program. Some were even from the healthcare profession (NAs, surgical techs, Resp..etc) and they didn't make it. I stayed up many nights not knowing if I were going to make it or not. I thought i had an upper hand, because i have a 4yr degree ...with a major that has heavy concentration in Math and Statistics. But Shiat.....I was mislead. Nursing was a whole other animal. I had other career changers in my class that were chemist and PhD's that found the program to be challenging.

Not trying to discourage nor scare anyone here......just keeping it real. This is very very doable, but far from a cake walk.

While the semester is in session, devote most of your time to studying. push your personal life to the side for a minute if you can...this will only be temporary. even if you are only doing 20 - 30 NCLEX questions/night....keep at it. You don't want to fall behind because you will make a challenging situation...that much more. You don't want to have to dig yourself out of a hole (low grades) because that will add more stress to a stressful situation.

Sorry for the long reply..... :-) Good luck !

and oh....just a little inspiration/motivation.....there are some hospitals in our area, that will pay $80 - $85k for a 4day work week. Add holidays and differentials and $90 - $100k is not out of the question. Not bad for a 2yr degree IMO.

which hospitals are you talking about?

i'm preparing to take the nursing entrance exam to hopefully start in the program in january. can anyone provide any insight on how to prepare for the exam or what to study?
