Bergen Community College Nursing Program Question

Published

Last Thursday I was at the college for the purpose of collecting my Chemistry grade with some classmates. Apparently, there was a graduation ceremony for RN's going on that night as well, and my friends started talking to one student to ask her about the program. I didn't hear the entire conversation, but one of my cohorts told me the student had stated that ELEVEN people had failed out of NUR-181 alone during her course!

Now, there's always a chance there was some sort of misunderstanding or miscommunication, but does this sound right? For what it's worth, I would think the application process and competitiveness of getting in to the program would assure a strong student population, so it makes me nervous to hear these things. I already received some insight from someone privately, but I was wondering what the public population made of this info.

Thanks!

The seats are not filled yet my dear! i made the same mistake and then I realized that the ratio is AVAILABLE to CAPACITY, so only a few spots are taken in Pharm and Concept and Skills. I am assuming those are students that failed them a previous semester. At first when I saw it I was like, OMG THE GODS ARE AGAINST ME. lol.

And does anybody know where they would put my change of major on WebAdvisor if I am accepted?

And hello KK, hope all is well for you my dear! I do not finish until Tuesday(my Anatomy prof took the optional extension for the snow days). I can not wait to be done with this term:)

I believe the change would be on your program evaluation. Click on that and it should say your new major where the old one used to be. Either that or check your profile on webadvisor and it should say. Right now, i'm living vicariously through you guys until I apply for the program! Lol once again, good luck!!

Thank you! But I read somewhere it was supposed to say something about there being a request for a change of major, and I do not see it there. Whatever. LOL.

Oh then i haven't heard anything about that. I guess look everywhere on webadvisor until something comes up lol.

Hi everyone! When is the last day of HESI exams? I had heard 5/19 - is that right?

That is what I heard as well. Don't know for sure though.

Hey ....

Whew, it's over for the next 3 months..made it the next level ( almost like a video game ..lol ) Anyway, there were 8 others who didn't make it thru to the next level ( a few of them were in tears-all that time and money- if you fail 2 classes you ARE OUT)-so make sure you study. I asked about being a volunteer at Valley and was told they had a huge supply already-that was months ago and I tried again early this month and they were full again. To everyone who pretty much knows you are getting in , I would suggest getting ahold of a pharmacology book and start memorizing ur drugs-what they do, adverse reactions, what to check first, etc...and also go onto a site and watch the video skills. You will be validated on how to do vital signs, hanging an IV , also a piggyback, a wet-to dry dressing, giving an IM & a SQ shot, drawing up meds, irrigating a NG tube, doing a PEG feeding, changing a central line dressing..they do take practice and these are only the ones that you have to record yourself and send in..there are others to do in person. I'm taking a week off for myself and then I'm starting the reading for the next level. I wish I knew about all this stuff before I was accepted the 1st yr. I would have read the books before , just to have a little edge on what they were talking about. Once you fall behind in the reading, it's hard to catch up...seems like you never do...anyway..stay strong and keep ur fingers crossed..see ya's in a few months...FIVsmile.png

" To everyone who pretty much knows you are getting in".......I WISH we knew!!!!!!!! A 91.25% sure as s*** doesn't make feel like I'm a shoe-in ;-)

Thanks for the advise just in case!! Getting ahead in the reading is definitely a good idea!!! I wish I would find out already so I could move forward with preparations and not be afraid that I am jinxing myself! LOL!

Thank you! Where would I find those videos, and what Pharm book would you recommend? I have seen some that are really really large, and then the pocket type ones. I only have class two days a week this summer so I need things to do to keep me feeling productive.

Another question, do you know of anyone that get's A's in the nursing courses? Like accross the board? I feel like with what you said about those 8 students failing out it would be impossible to maintain my GPA. And it is not for vanity, I am in PTK, and I need to keep around a 3.7 the first semester and a 3.5 there on to remain a member.

Thanks again Fisherman:)

Hey Moojie,

Yeah those pharm books are pretty large. The 1 that bergen said to get was Pharmacology a nursing process approach by Kee/Hayes/McCuistion. They are selling new for almost 100. We read the chapters, but all other books are the same.. WE NEVER USED THE BOOKS IN CLASS OR HAD ANY HOMEWORK ASSIGNED FROM THOSE BOOKS Get a good pharm book ( for $15 )or even the pharm cards and organize them according to categories..anti-inflammatory, antidepressants, antivirals, diuretics...As far as the videos..look on youtube, vimeo or they were in an old allnurses.com post ..see if you can find it by the person who posted them VICKYRN..if not get back to me and I'll email you the page..FIV

Student Resources: Nursing Procedures

I just finished 3rd level at Bergen. Yes, it is possible to get A's - I got an A in every first level class, no problem really. Second level whips you into shape and you will be thankful for a B or a B+ - I dont know anyone who got an A in 2nd level, but I am sure there were people. In 3rd level, I know a few got an A in psych, no one got an A in maternity as far as I know. The goal becomes just to pass and hopefully get a B - anything above that is gravy. We lost about 15 + people in level 2 and about 5 more in level 3. So, study study stud. I too am in PTK and still have a good GPA but am now mostly focused on completing the program.

Good Luck!

Thanks asp40:) My intentions are to go into a bachelor's program the year after my graduation. Of course everything else is secondary to just getting through the program. If it does come to pass that I can not stay in PTK, I would be upset, but by no means would I exit the program because I can not maintain my grades. I really appreciate students like you and fisherman who take the time to help pre-nursing students on this forum. I am sure others do as well:)
