I have worked for a NYSNA hospital in the the NYC area for 10 years. Since becoming vested 5 years ago my vacation time has increased to 5 weeks and a pension is growing. I also have 8 sick days, 8 holidays, and 2 personal days. All time is paid and accrues on a yearly basis. We are allowed to cary 2 weeks vacation into the next year and bank up to 300hrs sick time.

Taking pay rates and cost of living out of the equation I think this area offers some of the best nursing benefits in the country. Am I correct?

We get about 16 hours of paid time off per month, no 401k, no additional sick days other than your paid time off hours, no pension, insurance was free last year, but this year it is 25 bucks every two weeks for the lowest tier, which isn't very good, high deductible through United Healthcare (?).

In summary paid time off and pretty cheap, but not great insurance. They do offer like a HSA and 403(b) with no match if you want to, I don't utilize either one at this time but may in the future.

Oh, yes, after 35 years in the NHS I own my home, my wife and I have a car each. I have no debt, I have savings - I was able to give my son the deposit to buy a house. Most importantly I have no worries about going bankrupt because of medical bills.

While I was working I had no worries that my employer would one day decide to fire me for no reason and we had anti bullying procedures in place.

I am not going to get into this again as I have stated it in other threads, but do not compare salary in US with salary in UK. Costs are different as are benefits.

These posts are never a good idea, they tend to turn up emotions and become a pee pee contest.

I personally think that you should narrow it down to what states you would like to love to and research that way. There is already info on each designated state section too. There are many pros and cons to evaluate not just pay, COL and benefits.

For example, as crazy as this may sound, my job pay and benefits are and probably will never be what the OP has or like what Scotland has. Still, I chose this area due to no weather disasters, low taxes, decent COL, excellent school system for my little ones, low crime rate, finally being able to own a home with our modest income and it’s in a great neighborhood and newer construction.

To add to the post, insurance is about $700 a month for my spouse and kids included and a normal 80/20 PPO plan with a moderate deductible. PTO and sick bank are all lumped into one. Earn about 12 hours a month, no paid holidays, no weekend diff, a laughable night shift diff, no pension plan, 401k employee contributions gone, and average salary of $65k a year for a nurse with 5+ years experience. Oh, and no, there isn’t any pay difference if you have an ADN or DNP. Never have and I suspect they never will. I have never experienced a pay diff anywhere in the last few states we have moved to and worked in (military).

This is the norm in my metropolitan city and the grass is not greener even across nearby state lines.

Why can’t I compare salaries? NHS nurses start at 20k. That’s terrible by comparison. I don’t know what propaganda you read about insurance in the US, but you clearly think we pay a lot more for employer sponsored insurance than we actually do. People working full time and with benefits are not the ones suffering from crippling medical bills. Nurses in the US own their own homes, we have cars, we have 401k... seriously I want to know what propaganda you read that you think we have it so rough. Stop reading Facebook memes bro.

I was interested in Texas, more specifically Houston, which is very disaster prone from what I hear. But... I was surprised seeing the average nurse pay compared to the cost of living. I have looked into southern states along the eastern seaboard and while COL is fairly low the pay is also.

As attractive as Houston seemed it was the same old weak benefits package common in the southern states.

And please lets not fight. I started this thread for knowledge not bragging rights.

This is what I tell people all the time, if you are coming from California or New York then nothing, I mean nothing will be to your satisfaction because you are accustomed to making a lot more money than the rest of the country. those that do move and don’t resent it, find that it was necessary because of other factors such as schools, property, crime etc. if you are single or don’t have little ones, then it is a little bit different because the incentives that someone else would approve of, are not there for you.

in a nutshell, it is going to be very difficult to find everything you want and not give up something for something else. It is also going to be relative to what your reasons for wanting to move are.

I have worked in Texas and I personally feel I got paid adequately for the cost-of-living. There were also no state taxes taken out of my check. The traffic was not horrible. Parking was free everywhere including the hospital versus when I lived on the East Coast. Childcare was also a lot cheaper for me. I paid $25 a shift which was the going rate in an in-home daycare.

everyone has a different expectation and perspective. What may work for me may not work for you. For example, I need and depend on owning a vehicle. Taking the bus or train is not an option for me or my family. Areas that are dependent on that do not work for me and my lifestyle. Believe it or not, that is a huge factor in deciding where I want to live and work.

Yeah, it's a really strange propaganda site I have been reading. An awful lot of people on that site complain about high cost of insurance, high deductible, and management that can fire you for no reason.

Sorry, not trying to fight or hijack the thread but someone posted wrong information then was a tad dismissive when they were corrected. I was trying to show that there are other ways of doing things with better results.
