Benefits and PTO in UHS hospitals

I was recently hired to a PSI facility that will be UHS soon. I am wondering for those of you who work at either facility what your PTO looks like? Is it based on pay period? Does it kick in after a certain time? How many days off per period worked? Even if you don't work for either of these facilities, how does your PTO work? I am planning a wedding and need to make sure that I will accrue enough leave to take a honeymoon! Any advice would be great! Thank you in advance!

You need to tell your manager that you have a wedding in September and will need time off. Hopefully you can be accomodated. I knew when I was offered my first job that I wanted to take vacation a few months later, and I told the manager that I already had it planned (before I officially accepted the job). It was over a holiday and it was 16 days. She said it wouldn't be a problem. I made her put it in writing for me. I knew I would need a break and that it would be hard to get it off if I didn't say up front I had it already planned.

After spending the better part a year orienting a string of "in it for me" types who left almost as quickly as I got them going I am perhaps understandably touchy on this subject. I am sorry if I "picked" on you. I would begin the discussion of time off with your nurse manager; indicate that you understand that part or all of the time you are asking for may be without pay (because more likely than not it will be.) :imdbb:

For real? Choosing a place to work based on how quickly you will accumulate time off? I would love to be a fly on the wall for that interview! If this is the thing people are basing hiring decisions on nowadays that explains a lot about the state of nursing! Seriously though, if that is your main consideration for a job please stay at home until after you are married as your wedding is obviously the primary concern for you right now. Nothing wrong with that in itself but not a good thing when you should be most concerned about your patients at least for 8 -12 hours per day. When you are ready to seriously look for a job please consider if the mission statement of the organization is a match to your belief system, if they pay a living wage, if the staff seems happy to be there, if the place is clean and odor free among other things.

For real? I have been in nursing 25 years and I do choose where I want to work based partly on how quickly I will accumulate time off. You speak of the OP's primary concern right now being her wedding & that being "wrong", but in reality what makes that so different from any of the other obligations many of us have right here on this board..ie: kids, families, sick parents, etc. How many people do you really believe have only their job as their primary concern.

I go to work, do a damn good job but I am not ashamed to say that I work to live not live to work. Now...when is that next vacation?

From Feb to Sept should accrue you a decent amount of time off. I would talk to HR to find out at what rate you will accrue, how far in advance you have to ask for it off, etc. Then I would give your manager a heads up that in Sept you will be taking time off. Have a great honeymoon!

FLArn, I completely understand. I apologize if my reply was too defensive as well. I know the people you are talking about, and I also took it personally because I did not want to be associated with them, so there was a boo-boo on my part as well ;) *hugs it out* we all get on edge every now and then, myself included.

I'm completely comfortable with not getting paid for my leave if it exceeds what I have accrued, or I haven't accrued enough to cover it. It didn't even occur to me that I was talking about PTO, but I could still actually take the days off without it being paid. *head to desk* My major concern was just actually getting the time off to take the honeymoon, not if it was paid or not. I guess I phrased things wrong and confused my darn self!

TooterIA, I'm going in on Wednesday to do just that. I'm going to go finish up my physical on Mon, and turn in the stack of paperwork on Wed, so I'll just write down all the questions I have and figure it out there.
