Benefits and PTO in UHS hospitals

I was recently hired to a PSI facility that will be UHS soon. I am wondering for those of you who work at either facility what your PTO looks like? Is it based on pay period? Does it kick in after a certain time? How many days off per period worked? Even if you don't work for either of these facilities, how does your PTO work? I am planning a wedding and need to make sure that I will accrue enough leave to take a honeymoon! Any advice would be great! Thank you in advance!

For real? Choosing a place to work based on how quickly you will accumulate time off? I would love to be a fly on the wall for that interview! If this is the thing people are basing hiring decisions on nowadays that explains a lot about the state of nursing! Seriously though, if that is your main consideration for a job please stay at home until after you are married as your wedding is obviously the primary concern for you right now. Nothing wrong with that in itself but not a good thing when you should be most concerned about your patients at least for 8 -12 hours per day. When you are ready to seriously look for a job please consider if the mission statement of the organization is a match to your belief system, if they pay a living wage, if the staff seems happy to be there, if the place is clean and odor free among other things.

After 10 years of serivece you get 9 hours of PTO per pay period. Ususally it doesn't doesn't start accuring till after your probation period of 3 months. PTO accrual varies widely. In many places, you cant take any until after 3 months of employment. To take more than a week, you have to put in for it several months in advance. I accrue 3 hours per paycheck as a new employee.

If I were you, I would just tell them upfront you have a honeymoon to take and see what they say.

I think I acrrue about 6.5 hrs a pay period, so 13 hrs or so a month. I was happy to see that after I hit 60 days I was given my accrued PTO up to that point :). I don't blame you for wondering what you can expect, I hope you asked for your wedding time off when you accepted the job (unless it's next year).

I think you jumped to an assumption here, and I don't appreciate that. I'm a new grad, have never held ANY job before, and don't know how all of this works. I got hired a week after I passed my NCLEX at a facility that I did clinicals at for 2 years. I love it there, I agree with their mission statement and philosophy, I am truly concerned about the patients (why would I work Psych otherwise?), and to be blunt the reason I don't know the answers to this question is because I DIDN'T want to come off as only in it for the benefits during my interview, so I didn't ask.

Sheesh! I think some of us need to tone down the high and mighty. :rolleyes:

Thank you, everyone else for your input. I will be starting in Feb and my wedding is in September. I didn't mention it in the interview, but I will be talking to HR about it this week. Er well, one question... is this something I talk to HR about or my Nurse Manager?

PTO time will not be available to use until after probationary period completed which varies from 3-6 months per facility. Some employers have you acruing PTO after first 30 days, others not until probation completed.

This will be reviewed with you usually during first weeks orientation session. Employers are moving from handbooks to online HR + Nursing policy and procedure guideline-- make sure you ASK how to obtain HR information for future reference.
