Ben Taub ER travel assignment

Hi my fellow travel nurses. This is my first post. I'm taking my first travel assignment. I will be working at Ben Taub ER. I wanted to know if there are any travelers who have worked there recently? I heard that they only put travelers to work in there "decision unit" which sounds to me like an holding unit for patients. I don't want to be a med-surg nurse for the next 13 weeks. Wanted to hear from someone who recently worked there.

Thanks

NedRN not really an interview. I never spoke with a manager if the unit. I spoke with a person who handles all of the travelers there. Have you worked there before?

No, I haven't worked there. The interview is the best place for such a question. If you have a name, you might try calling them directly or ask your agency to arrange a followup call or inquiry. I doubt that you will be doing strictly medsurg type practice. If that is what the hospital wanted, they can get medsurg RNs cheaper than ER nurses. But if you have any doubt and strong feelings, lots of other jobs out there!

Specializes in Emergency Room.

I am planning on traveling to houston in the winter. I am interested in hearing about your experience.

I haven't worked in Ben Taub ER before but I am a Houston Native and worked at several hospitals in the Medical Center. I would suggest that you speak to the Director and ask him/her that question via phone or email. Of course at any new place you need to showcase your skills so they feel more comfortable letting you into the jungle because Ben Taub is just that. I've never seen a travel nurse being given a lesser assignment just because of that. They always blend in. I do know that Ben Taub is a level one trauma mad house so be careful what you wish for. I currently work at St Joseph and I know in their ER you will be an ER nurse.

I did my first travel assignment at Ben taub. A little of my background- I had 2 years ER experience in a level II ER. Ben taub was another world! VERY busy. VERY fast paced. Most times, understaffed. You wear every hat - nurse, tech, housekeeping, porter.... Everything. I hated my first 2 months... By the end, it wasn't quite so bad. I considered extending but couldn't due to commitments at home. Expect 12.5 hour work days with 30 mins break, no break coverage. Great staff, very nice and helpful when they aren't swamped too. Houston was a fun city, so many fun bars/ restaurants/ lounges/ places to go.
