It seems that about 2/3rds of the posts on here mention either being sued or losing your license...it doesn't seem to matter what the topic is someone makes a comment about losing your license or being sued.
I am curious as to whether this is a valid fear or whether this is part of fear-based nursing culture.
1. How many years have you been a nurse?
2. How many nurses do you know personally that have been sued?
3. How many of those nurses who were sued have had to testify in court?
4. How many of those who testified were found guilty?
5. How many nurses do you know personally who have lost their license for patient related (non-criminal) actions? (By non - criminal I mean not for cases of drug diverting or robbing a back or something where the nurse knows what they are doing is illegal and will result in losing their license)
Thanks!
I think what she was trying to tell you is that it would be unusual for a PA (Physician's Assistant) to be under the jurisdiction of the board of nursing.Boards of nursing govern nurses, sometimes nursing assistants and other non-licensed personnel, but not PAs.
I apologize I made a mistake she is not a PA (Physicians Assistant) She is a NP ( Nurse Practitioner) and they dont care you are right but they should...
Shes very much licensed in good standing with no discipline. Sentencing Hearing Held In Distracted Driving Case
I've been a nurse for >20 years.
I've never known a nurse whose been sued, that I'm aware of.
I personally know two nurses who have lost their licenses, both for uncontrolled alcoholism.
I have seen the names of literally dozens of nurses I've known in the disciplinary section of my state board's newsletter.

I just feel its so unfair to the family who lost their momma and daddy that she didnt lose anything and probation is barely discipline. When shes free to do as she pleases. I just don't understand it. I hate this small town politic game its pathetic its all about who you know... Shes not the only nurse in our town who has killed someone and faced no consequence some havent even faced probation.
I've been a nurse since 1993 and I've seen 4 nurses involved in 2 different lawsuits. I believe the facility and Drs were the ones being sued with the nurses just as witnesses.I've also never seen a nurse I knew lose her license. Seen 1 sent to the diversion program, but that's it.
in these cases no one was punished at all even when the family took the stand and pleaded with the judge to give her some punishment. i still can't believe it.
I'm glad this thread got resurrected; it's enlightening.
I have been a nurse for two years and I know someone who's been sued. I made some comment recently about how I hope I never get sued to a coworker and she shared with me that she was currently in the middle of a lawsuit. She didn't say anything else and I didn't press her. As she is still working with me, I am sure it either got dropped or it wasn't anything illegal.
I know 4 nurses who have appeared before the BON. One was fined for not renewing her license on time. One was disciplined for a med error that harmed a patient and falsifying the MAR. One was disciplined for a series of med errors. The one who lost her license faked a home visit, complete with fake assessments and forged signatures, then never showed up for her hearing.
