Being accepted... Is it a sign?!?

Published

SOO I applied for an accelerated nursing program that incorporated the preqs I have left (a&p and micro). I've been waiting to hear back from them and decided today that maybe I should just take a&p with micro in the fall at my local community college and reapply for spring admission (so I knock a semester off of the tuition). I felt good about my decision and today, ironically, I get a phone call that I have been accepted into the program. There were over 400 applicants & I made it through the first round. I feel like it would be so stupid to give away my spot and take a chance to apply for spring instead knowing there's no guarantee ill be accepted again, but then again, I was accepted for a reason and others were denied for a reason. It appears more financially feasible to go to a comm college again where I can pay for the tuition out of pocket but I'm not opposed to taking out loans for the nursing program either because it's for my future and my passion of becoming an RN. So... Any opinions or advice would be AWESOME. Do I save some money by taking an extra semester at a comm college and reapply for the spring (giving away my position in the program now) or just jump the gun and celebrate and start the nursing program in the fall?!?

I think it would be crazy to turn down the slot! JMO, I tried twice before to get into our program and finally got in on my third try.

Honestly, if it were me I would jump the gun, celebrate, and accept my nursing school position.

I could understand the financial burden, but I'd do it.

I would not risk your admission to the program. In the long run one semester of classes isn't going to save you that much more money, especially if you could be working sooner than later.

Thank you all for the fast replies!!! You're so right! Now that I've finally been accepted all I can think about is 1)holy crap, I finally did it!!! And 2) now to take out loans to afford the 9,000 a semester!!! Hahah. Honestly, I'm prepared for it. Getting a great education is worth any type of loan, besides, I'm getting into a good career so it's not like I won't be able to afford my payments. I've been waiting for this moment and now it's here!! It's amazing yet so scary at the same time. Thank you for the opinions!!! Keep them coming!!

I am sort of in the same boat as you..... I was accepted into 2 Nursing programs of top 100 schools (According to US News) before I even finished all my pre-reqs(A&P,Micro, Chem, etc). I decided not go to either school but I am going finish my pre-reqs at the CC I am at. My parents would be paying for school for me but I feel bad making them pay 40-50k. When I could finish my prereqs for like 4k. I will be reapplying after all my pre-reqs are done and I would think if I keep up my good grades , I should be accepted again.

Just curious, what are these programs that don't require pre reqs done? The only schools I know of that do that are career schools.

There are some schools that will let you apply if you have a certain amount of prerequisites done with some left to go.

Baylor University offers an ABSN program and is an established, prestigious private university. In order to apply, you have to have 50 of the 66 prerequisite hours completed and specifically, 3 out of 4 science classes completed. They must be done before nursing school starts. This is the ABSN program I am hoping to get accepted to.

Thanks, jenniferkampy! As far as your original post, I say go for the ABSN program. Don't risk losing your seat by waiting another semester.

Yeah I totally agree, but there's more to it! Let me explain.. If I take anatomy & micro this fall at a local comm college, I'm eligible to "graduate" with my associates because I've been in school for like 4 years haha between going to a university for 2 years and then stepping down to a community college for 1 year. If I get my associates, I can qualify for more loans & possibly pell grants... And also qualify for funding again from the education program for my tribe. I'm Native American and my tribe helps funding for school but I didn't receive funding anymore because I went from a university to a community college and still don't have a degree. So that's why it's a difficult decision, if I jump the gun and start in the fall at the ABSN program then I use Stafford loans and private student loans from the bank. However, if I risk waiting one more semester I can qualify for more financial aid and risk half of the financial burden. It's such a big decision!!! I also think... If I got accepted through the first round this time, why wouldn't I get accepted next time ?! It's a risk... But it could be a risk worth taking. :( idkk

Wow! This is a lot to think about. I'm with you on the fear of student loans. In order to do my ABSN program, I will definitely have to take out loans. I'm a bit nervous about doing so too. I can't say for sure what I would do in your situation because I don't know the specifics or the details of your situation. Have you asked your family and friends for advice? I don't want to say trust your gut because this will be a huge decision that will impact your life.
