BCIT January 2020

Published

My fellow nursing prospects, I hope CASPer treated you well. Any idea when we find out if we’ve gotten in? What did you all apply with?

As per the advisors at BCIT, I’m in the 8%’ers—I only have 32 credits, my cGPA is 3.6 but my overall GPA is lower because of two classes I was unable to complete over 10 years ago; however I’ve been a nuclear medicine tech for 12 years. I applied for nursing on a whim so let’s see what happens!

Good luck everyone!!

Hmm ok, well hopefully I can find out sooner rather than later. Fingers crossed. BCIT is my top choice, and I’ve applied for the Jan 2021 intake, but I’ve also applied to other schools for September, as backup! I hope I get in somewhere, but BCIT would be ideal.

For those who got accepted into the January 2020 program, when did you get your acceptance offer? What month approximately?

I got mine the second week of June!

I’m an adult learner, I applied with a previous BA in Psychology completed In 2009. My GPA was not great back then as I was distracted by other things. I recently completed 18 credits through TRU to meet BCITs prerequisites and demonstrate my current academic ability. Those credits were a mix of A and A+. I have also worked in health care for the past 8 years working as a residential care support worker. Additionally, I have years of volunteer experience. I’m hoping my recent work and CASPer score help me overcome my lower GPA from my previous degree.

Based on what I see, you have a strong application, work experience is more important than volunteer. Volunteer is only accounted for if you and another applicant have the same points, they will look at your volunteer to determine who the stronger applicant is. It it helps, when I applied, I had a BSc degree and my gpa wasn’t so great due to my first 2 years and some personal things that affected it. My work experience was leadership and customer oriented as well as pharmacy assistant. However I didn’t have to do CASPR even though the Jan 2020 intake required it because I was waitlisted from September 2019 top 15. So I believe you should be fine for your application.

In terms of grades, I averaged the B+ to A range in my prerequisites. I was trying to apply for the Douglas College BSN program so I had exactly 30 credits when applying to the BCIT program. I had previous volunteer experience in a senior home (1.5 years) and at Royal Columbian Hospital (about 1 year). My work experience was working at an animal clinic for 4+ years! I honestly think my experience in the health care field helped more than my overall grades. Just make sure you are applying with enough experience in different fields whether you are volunteering/working. From what I hear from people in my cohort, they really like seeing a well-rounded individual rather than someone who just has a high GPA. Best of luck! ?

It’s really a mix haha, the point scoring is the biggest thing though. People with degrees score the highest points but their overall cGPA is considered on top of the prerequisites. So if you did poor in high school grades but have higher grades in university for like Chemistry and Math, submit the university grades. And when it comes to work experience they want leadership and customer service oriented roles. It doesn’t have to be health care! And I’m not sure about CASPR since I never did it.

Lastly I would highly recommend taking LIBS7001 and 7002 or 7021, because it will give you more points on the application and it will make your term3 and term5 easier!

Is it possible to ask to be considered for the September 2020 instead if you are too late for the deadline and are actually applying for the January 2021 intake? I heard it's possible but how?

You would have to speak with the nursing program advisor but it’s probably unlikely given that the intake is now closed. I only know of people asking to deter their admission to a later intake than an earlier intake.

Thank you for replying.

I guess that's the part I am stuck on, I will definitely talk to the school about this. lol. It's a long wait for January 2021. ? I just want to get started already. ? lol

Yeah I feel that, I applied for the September 2019 intake and got shifted into the January 2020 intake so I waited a bit before I started ?, but I would recommend using the time to take the 2 libs classes you can take prior because it will benefit you when you are in the program. Will make your course load easier

The waiting is tough, that’s true. Unfortunately it’s competitive and there are limited seats. I decided to pursue a career change and do nursing. When I made that decision I wanted it to happen right away. But upgrading courses and waiting for application dates can take a couple years, and I had to learn patience. You can take a couple nursing courses from BCIT ahead of time if you want to lighten your load a bit later. That may give you something to do as you wait.
