BCIT January 2020

World Canada CA Programs

My fellow nursing prospects, I hope CASPer treated you well. Any idea when we find out if we’ve gotten in? What did you all apply with?

As per the advisors at BCIT, I’m in the 8%’ers—I only have 32 credits, my cGPA is 3.6 but my overall GPA is lower because of two classes I was unable to complete over 10 years ago; however I’ve been a nuclear medicine tech for 12 years. I applied for nursing on a whim so let’s see what happens!

Good luck everyone!!

”BCIT Nursing January 2020!”

??

Thanks for making it! I also requested to be in it ?

Thank you for creating the Facebook group. I just ask to join ? I cant wait to meet all of you in January!! Where are you guys doing the CPR and fitting test?

Im doing pre requisites to apply to the bsn program at bcit and was wondering for anyone thats finished the program recently or currently attending how was the application process? How were your grades like and how is your work experience? They're telling me I need to have 90's in every pre req requirement which is extremely overwhelming because some of these classes aren't that easy. Need to upgrade my math to meet the requirement but do they even care about the high school grade requirements or just the post secondary classes at bcit? Also do they prefer people more over that work in health care? Im currently a care aide hoping that will increase my chances.

I can tell you, I did not have 90% in every prerequisite class, specifically the university ones. My highschool marks were fine except for Chemistry, so I used my second year OChem mark from university to replace that mark.

The application process is fairly straight forward, you score points based on your application and the more points the better. They've also introduced CASPR into future applications and I can't speak on how that is cause I've never taken it, but you can always google and find out how those are graded. As for maximizing points, you get the most points if you have a completed degree from any recognized university, but they also consider your GPA. As for work experience, it does not have to be cantered around health care. You can have job experience where leadership and customer service were the main roles and that would make your application stand out.

You also have the option of taking the two LIBS classes ahead of time. These two LIBS classes are to be completed during the program but you have the option of taking it ahead of time and reducing your work load.

There are several forum posts with all this information so I suggest skimming through if you want to know more.

Is there still chances of getting in if you don't already hold a degree from a recognized university? What kind of grades did most of you have in each pre-requisite? I have mostly B's in mine. I also have a lot of work experience as an HCA for over 2 years now so I'm wondering if that would be good enough?

Hello,

It all depends. Majority of spots are offered to students who have degrees. When it comes to point scoring on the application process, if you have a degree out score the most points, then 60 credits then 30 credits. But it all depends how your application stands out, how many credits do you have? It really depends on your application because you don't need to have health care work to stand out. Manager positions, leadership positions and customer service oriented looks just as good.

Based on what you told me, if your grades are around the B range (assuming you have 30 credits) with HCA experience, your application sounds probably a little over borderline. But this is my opinion based on the information.

My bad, I totally misread your post. When it comes to having a degree from an unrecognized university, you should check with admissions to see which courses can transfer over. As for the application process, they may or may not consider that you have a degree from an unrecognized university but it all depends as each application is evaluated individually.

If you have doubts you can ways consider taking LIBS 7001 and LIBS 7002/7021. These are courses that can be taken ahead of time and will count towards the nursing program if you are accepted as you need to take these classes during the program. You will get points ts for taking the classes.

And even if you get through round 1 of the application process which is meeting the minimum requirements, there is still the matter of the questionnaire and CASPR.

Hi everyone! I'm currently working on the BCIT nursing pre-requisites. If you guys don't mind, can you share your GPA/grades on each pre-req courses.

I'm also planning on applying to BCIT in 2021. But I'm a bit discouraged as I have no degree. As far as I've heard, BCIT prioritizes applicants that have degrees already.

I'm currently volunteering at a seniors daycare center which hopefully will help me get in BCIT Nursing. I also don't know my grades yet (for the pre-reqs) as I'm gonna start taking them this January. Any tips/advice on how to get in BCIT Nursing?

Also, CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU GUYS! I'M SO EXCITED FOR ALL OF YOU ?

Take the 2 LIBS classes offered at BCIT. specifically LIBS 7001 and 7002 or 7021. These two classes will boost your application because it is a requirement to be taken during the nursing program but you can take it ahead of time and have a reduced course load during terms 2 and 4.

Get work experience over volunteer experience. Specifically work experience that has leadership or customer service oriented roles. This does not have to be health care related. The reason is because volunteer experience isn’t looked at until the end when they have to decide between 2 applicants that scored the same amount of points.

As for GPA, you want to get as high as possible, but it is possible to get in with lower stats. Preparing for CASPR, I would recommend searching up forums and YouTube to get a sense of what to expect for CASPR. Essentially they are going to ask you interview related questions and it is sort of like an MMI setting where you have x amount of time to answer the question.

edit: forgot to add the part about degrees. Yes it is true that BCIT accepts more applicants who have degrees or a lot of university credits, like about 50% of seats are applicants who have degrees, and about 5-10 who have only prerequisites. But don’t be discouraged, that only plays a small part of the application process. I would suggest applying g to langara and UBC as well if you can, I know depending where you take your human anatomy courses will depend if you can apply to langara or not.

For those who got accepted into the January 2020 program, when did you get your acceptance offer? What month approximately?

It depends, I think the people who had to go through the full application process, they started accepting the offers back at around June, but they throw out offers in rounds. The people who were waitlisted got their acceptances in September (those seats were reserved for them already; specially top 15 and behind if there was space
