BCIT August 2013 Applicants

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Hello future nurses,

I am so excited to be starting nursing at BCIT in August!

For future applicants: To have a strong application make sure you have work experience, volunteer experience (preferably healthcare), as well as liberal arts courses - my Psych 241 at SFU transferred over as a libs course and I will find out if any other courses of mine transfer over once I send them an updated transcript.

I am going to be going in with a completed BSc in Kinesiology and Psychology, but a full degree is not necessary, just at least 60 credits to be competitive!

Anyone else defer to August?

Just for reference, when do we graduate? I know the program isnt exactly 3 years, right? I read somewhere 2 years and 10 months?

graduation 2016 May

what does bcit stand for? Is it a university?

Hey! It's been so long since I have been on here! Congrats to everyone who been accepted/waitlisted. I am so happy for those of you who have been on these threads for a while. careubc I am sooo happy for you! I am entering Level 4 of the program and still remember the stress of the "unknown" before I started. I have a blog but can not post the link here or I violate the TOS...so if anyone is interested in reading about my journey with the program so far, send me a message and I will PM you....I have also posted that link on the D2L orientation questions page on mybcit.....and I often link it on the BCIT nursing page. my girl "Condale" is also a level 4 blogger and has some great material!

It seems impossible right now, but try to trust that everything will work itself out. Sometimes it's hard waiting for information,/ schedules etc, but the team in charge is very very busy making your schedules, getting you seperated into your small groups, and likely dealing with applicants for the next intake.....AND at the same time, making the schedules, figuring out placements etc for ALL the other levels.... try to enjoy your summer. I know EXACTLY how excited some of you are to start, and that is awesome, but try to do something non BCIT Nursing for a bit this summer, because once you start, it's full throttle!

I will repeat what was said earlier- you can not follow the schedule on mybcit- you will receive your schedule the first week of class- classes will run between 7 and 5 but the hours will vary for each of you-each NURS class ( the non science ones) are split up into smaller group - hence the overlap on mybcit- clinical is either mornings or afternoons or a combo of both. DO your readings, be a self directed learner- while BCIT is very supportive, no one is going to hold your hand in this program.... I remember the first week thinking, WOW, this is crazy, no homework!....I was soooo wrong! There was homework/ reading in every class!- listed in the online component- we were expected to keep up and keep on top of it- the instructors didn't say in class what was already posted online... so pay attention to D2L

Sign up for the mentorship program. I did and am so thankful. My mentor is now graduated and working, and we still talk...In nursing, your colleagues are a great source for info and support. If I can help anyone with anything, please ask....there are some great people on here that are currently in the program that can offer a wealth of info...also check out the D2L question/answer page.

You will need to be organized. I bought 2 giant white board calendars with 5 months on it and put them up in my room. I was able to write all of my assignments/ due dates, clinical shifts etc....it came in handy when the best I could do was survive a week at a time! You wont have the on site orientation....this might seem sucky, but there are other tools in place to help orient you....By the end of my orientation I was ready to pass out....and that was a common comment from other students as well......it's a super long night, so try to take advantage of the q and a page on D2L, watch the orientation videos, and try to enjoy your freedom :) I think it's a great idea to get together before classes start or even after the first week....Us nursing students tend to make good use of the campus Pub ;)

The time has flown by so quickly......especially during school! compared to looooonnnggg wait of being accepted. It is natural to have a little stress and alot of questions.....your life is going to change significantly in the next cpl months as you begin your own journey to becoming an RN. I wish you all the very best! It is so exciting! For those of you who did not get in this time, if you decide to apply again, I wish you the best as well. Commitment to the program, and drive to try again are great qualities.

Again, congrats to everyone! See you in August :nurse:

Thanks for all that info smiley65! I have been following this site to get advice for so long and I remember reading about when you were waiting to get accepted yourself! You have always been so helpful to everyone's questions... and mine too! You seem like you would be a wonderful and helpful nurse. I can't wait to get started but I am excited to make the most of the rest of the summer too! :)

Hey, i started a thread for January 2015 intake!!? i got all inspired and excited with this thread! Haha.

Congrats to all who got accepted!! :)

What do you guys think of the "not mandatory but strongly recommended" textbook list? Have any of you guys already bought the books on this list? Any advice from previous level 1 students? I'm thinking of just waiting until classes start to see whether or not i should get the textbooks.

I attended BCIT in the past and bought all the required and mandatory books. I found that I didn't used the following books very much.

1. Physical Examination & Health Assessment

2. Canadian Fundamentals of Nursing

3. Mosby's Manual of Diagnostic and Laboratory Tests

I used the above books mainly for PBL level 1. It's hard to sell books afterwards so maybe sharing the above books would be a good investment.

I only bought nursing care plans because I was told from a previous student that it is extremely useful.

I'm sure this has been addressed already somewhere in the forum, but do we get our official course schedule on the first day of classes or should they be emailing them out soon?

The forum on mybcit.com says we get them the week before classes start
