Barry University

Hi everyone! So I'm totally new here, I'm about to graduate in May from a school with a Communications degree, I decided this summer after some interesting turn of events that I wanted to be a nurse! I had some random prerecs that I had already taken and took a few more this semester. I applied to Barry's second degree program and got in! I did realize after though that the second degree program only starts in Jan? I was going to take a full course load of classes this summer at a cc and then i'd be done my prerecs and able to apply to the actual nursing program for the fall. My question is if I take all those classes this summer can I not even start taking the nursing classes in the fall? Will I have to wait until the spring semester to start? I'm out of state and I want to get through the Barry program quickly as possible! Has anyone had any issues like this?

Thanks!

Hello Barry Students,

I am new to this post thing, but I am starting Fall 2010 generic option at Barry University too.. I was wondering if any one applied to the Baptist scholar and if they got a response already, I did and im waiting for a reply. I cant wait to start this program, I am so excited! I hope I get the Baptist Scholarship =D In one month we will all be starting nursing courses how great is that? I hope to be meeting some of you at Orientation:nurse:

Hi Priscy89!

I will also be starting the generic option this fall. I registered for section 3, which section are you in? I applied to the Baptist Scholarship, but received a letter on Saturday that I was not accepted. I have two other friends that applied with me, but they have yet to receive a phone call or letter. Hopefully you get the scholarship!! Have you bought your books and uniforms yet?

Hope to meet you soon!!!

I am accepted to Barry Accelerated this year. From this web site one said that in 2007only18 students graduated of 60s that were entered initially the Program. Can someone to confirm it or explain is it true? Can someone give any information about an actual graduation rate this year, or the last one, 2009? What has been a real problem for most students to pass the classes? I really surprise, if it is a true!

I will be appreciated for any response. As I have another option, but in the different state and I have to move there from Florida, which is an additional expense fro me. It is MSN, such as an entry level program for the students who have not had any nursing education before. Also, I have to wait almost two years to enter this MSN –Entry level. By the way, financial difference will be that in this case I do not have to take a private loan, compared with BSN in Barry, because it is expensive edu. , and would be impossible for anyone with a second degree to graduate without a private loan.

Thank you.

Hello, I am starting as well. Have you refinance it? With second degree we need private loan. Did you try any scholarship? I'll be appreciated let me know.

Hi Puma123,

I am a graduate of Barry's Accelerated ooption 2010. It is very doable, you just have to be organized and stay on top of your studying. We started with like 44 people and about 36 graduated this past May. First semester:we lost two people and I think that if you can't make it through the first semester, the AO is not for you. Second, semester: we lost 2 people in IFC(failure) , I hope they have changed the book for that class. Lost 1 in Mental Health due to illness. Third semester: lost 2 due to failure in Med-Surg. My advice to you is invest in Saunders Comprehensive NCLEX Review Book (4th or later edition) and practice dosage calculations before start of program, that is what helped me. Use your NCLEX book while studying, its broken into sections and you can just go along with what you're learning. Also start doing NCLEX questions first semester. Read your books and notes and do questions after to make sure you understand what you're studying. You cannot memorize, you will find yourself struggling. The professors are great and try and get involved with the Nursing Student Association, great way to network and get to know faculty and staff in school of nursing. Good Luck future nurse!!!

hi doralmom,

i am very appreciated for your information and tips. it is extremely helpful. you mentioned about failure. i read that nursing students can retake one or two classes and continue the program. does this option really exist?

i know it would be very hard!

anyway thank you so much for your response!

Im not a Barry student but as a grad from FIUs program. If one fails they can retake once but you wont graduate at the same time so thats how a graduating class looses people. You cant move on the in courses until you pass everything so if you fail medsurg for example you must retake it the nwxt semester so you will graduate one semester later with the class that was under your original class.

hi puma123,

i am in the basic bsn program..i'm not sure about if the rules are different for the accelerated students, but we were told that if we get any c's the first 2 semesters we would have to petition to be allowed to take med-surg in the summer. then if you aren't allowed to take med-surg in the summer, you would be put behind into the 3 year program. as for failing...i'm not very sure, but i think you are allowed to fail 2 classes...but you will probably be put into the 3 year program as well...which is a lot longer than the accelerated.

be positive! you will not fail!! try to keep up with your readings, and try to study constantly- do not leave studying for the last minute- it will reflect on your grade.

also, why don't you look into the basic bsn program? the accelerated program is very intense... courses like pharmacology are only 5 weeks long vs a regular semester.

Hi! I am thinking about applying to Barry for the Generic BSN program. I was wondering if you could give me any information on admissions? Is it really competitive to get in? And what kind of GPA did you have when you got accepted?

Hi,

I've heard that admissions has changed since I applied, and getting a bit tougher.

Here is the link for the requirements:

I would suggest visiting the campus to see the advisor in the Nursing Bldg since requirements have changed. They are really helpful.

Best of luck!
