Baker pre-reqs

Published

I am just starting out with my pre-reqs at baker. How hard is A&P 1 and does it get much harder?

I know I'm going off the subject but from what I'm reading on here it is very difficult to get in the program. I'm gonna try my best. Wish me luck!

What is the 3 page paper on?? Most instructors don't expect you to be perfect on the first paper. You make the mistakes, then fine tune it to their expectations. The next paper you have more of an idea on what to expect.

The 3 page is from 1 of 3 poems.

Thanks. Same to you. I am taking death and dying online, and had to read a chapter on death of a child, the parents and siblings and the child's response and expectations... and yadda, yadda, yadda... and I am wore out and have a paper to write still tonight.

I can't believe that they held it against you. I added and dropped classes repeatedly while I have been at Baker and only the class that I took and dropped 3-4 weeks in, did they hold against me.

I know that I wanted to drop death and dying when it started, I wanted to switch and take it in person, but online registration was closed, so I didn't want to do anything. I think that if you can drop it yourself online, then it might not be held against you, but if you have to have them do it because they closed registration, then you are probably screwed.

Is this on the Maya Angelo pomes or something like that?

I would try to muddle through it, if you can't drop.

The guidelines for MLA are very consistent, I found that with APA there are somethings that can be left out depending on how long the paper is or what the expectations of the teacher are. But with MLA, the rules remain really pretty much the same.

oops, poems... my spelling is bad tonight....LOL

I agree Gemberly. APA at first confused me, going from MLA to APA, but once I got the hang of it all, it really wasn't that hard to do. Plus I do love to do research, state my opinions, back them up with facts and so forth. That is what I think I really liked about the MLA, it is not as a medical journal, like you stated, as MLA. I could put my thoughts into it....LOL

Dream2011, if you don't have a "writer's packet" purchased from Baker's book store, buy it. It has a writing handbook all about grammar, word structure, APA and MLA formats, etc. It's a real handy little thing and I bet it would help you a lot with your formatting.

I'm in Comp II, and I have a 3 page paper AND a 1 page paper due on Thursday also. Our 3 page is just a rough draft, and I don't know if my teacher is going to take points off for whatever criteria she is using to score it, or just give you full points for having it completed.

The 1 page paper, however, is a little different since we haven't learned how to do APA yet, and we're expected to write a personal opinion in that format. I'm just gonna wing it and follow the formatting to the best of my ability, and use whatever sources I have.

Thankfully with the rough draft, if we make any formatting and/or grammar mistakes, I'm assuming annotations will be made so that way we know what we're doing wrong. Good luck!

Ugh I hated Comp II. I took it online and I had a great teacher but we had to put our papers up for group review and most of the people were really nice, but there was one person that I could not stand, and I always seemed to be paired up with that person. The first time I was really nice about my review and they ripped me up (unfairly mind you), so the next time it was on....lol.

Dream,

My sister's has the same exact assignment due. A 3 page paper on a poem. I think she is doing the Barbie Doll one and a 1 page response. She feels really overwhelmed by it. She said her instructor told them she expects them to be "harvard scholars" ***? Some of these people haven't had classes in 15-20 or more.

She said that their research paper will be on Shakespeare.

I had Pat Felix and she was great! My first paper and my research paper were the same topic. I just kept doing research and adding to the first paper.

She said her instructor's last name starts with an O. Is it the same one??

Good luck in that class!

Shannon, I liked Comp 2 enough, I generally like writing anyway, but we were literally the guys first class ever. LOL He didn't give us the guidelines for the research paper assignment until 2 weeks before it was due, and we only met once a week, so we didn't have time to turn in a rough draft or anything. I got an A, but boy it was nerve wracking at the end there!

I have professor O for Comp II and I love her :)

TS, is she as rigid as she seems my sister is really stressed out. She told her class that the rough draft had to be "3 pages with 1 line on the fourth page". I don't know if my sister is just BSing me or not, but that sounds a little more strict than I would expect for a rough draft.

Thanks everyone for the info. I called the nursing dept. and talked to Karen. Unfortunaltely once class starts there is no dropping or you lose a point no matter if its the first day or 3rd week. I'm gonna stick with it and turn in the papers and see how I do and see what she expects or expected for that matter. I don't recall the 1 line on the 4th page. Maybe I will email her.
