I'm just curious here, has anyone attended Bacone College in Muskogee? I need to get more info on it, but I believe it has an RN program. Anyone know about this school? What is it like, pluses and minuses, etc? All I know is that it's in Muskogee, and from where I live in Broken Arrow, I could drive that if I don't get into TCC. Right now I'm saving up for nursing school because I don't want to take out any more loans. It'll be cheaper in the long run... it may take a little while, but I REALLY want to do this. If anyone knows anything about Bacone, I'd appreciate it! :) Kat

I have a girl in my Chemistry class this summer that got her RN from Bacone and then her BSN. (Well technically they're holding her BSN hostage until she completes her final class which is Chem 1, but she did everything else with them.) She really liked it. It's private though isn't it? Would be a lot more expensive. Have you checked into OSU Okmulgee? They have an associates RN program and I think prereqs are about the same except they require Chem 1. Rogers is also an option but I'm told they require you to take A&P from them - they won't accept it from other schools.
Thanks Lana!
I didn't realize that Bacone was private, so I guess that knocks them off my list. I will check on OSU-Muskogee but someone I thought that they did all of their OSU nursing downtown through Langston (which has NCLEX-RN scores in the upper sixties at the moment, the previous year wasn't so hot either ). I could be wrong though. If someone could clarify this I would appreciate it.
Unfortunately, Rogers is a little far for me. I'm in BA and I think it might take me around an hour+ to attend Rogers. I guess personally I'm a little biased against them, a friend of mine had a really bad experience over there as a professor, so I don't know.
However, that program at Tulsa Tech 1+1 sounds interesting. Thanks for postng about that Lana!! (At least, I think it was you. :)) MY apologies if it's not.
Just to clarify, it's not OSU- Muskogee, it's Okmulgee! :) Their program is completely separate from Langston (as far as I know). OSU's program is associates and Langstons is Bachelors. As far as Rogers, they went off my list of possible colleges long ago, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't be good for someone else. I just hate that they make you take prereqs there and won't accept anybody elses (they also require dosage calc as a prereq and it must be from them and it is weighted heavily in the admission process.) Hope that helps. I know it's frustrating trying to figure out what to do, but the best thing is to have all the info and several options, like you're doing!
D'oh! You're right, Lana! That'll teach me from responding to a post at almost midnight. Actually, I will check on them as well. It's really not gonna hurt but I think the drive might be a little tough.
For what it's worth, I did call for an info pack from Bacone. It is a private school and they offer a bridge ADN to BSN. All for nearly $10,000. I'm sure I can find a bridge program for a little less money.
Thanks for catching my mistake, Lana! :)

:)
That's really not a horrible price considering that it's private. OU's program is currently(05-06 school year) around $6500 for the RN-BSN and it's going up. Seems like I had heard TU's program was around $16000.

Yeah, great... I know TU would be asking for $16K when their 2004 NCLEX pass rates were in the 50% range... They have come up, but I'd be concerned about a program whose graduates had abysmal pass rates on boards just 2 years ago, and paid ~$12K for the privilege of doing so..
They did raise it to 80% in 2005, which means only 3 of their 15 didn't pass. That's something, but I would hope that if I paid that much I would almost be guaranteed to pass!
Really, no kidding.
My mom also mentioned that the TU nursing students/grads are a little less likely to want to "get their hands dirty", to phrase it nicely.
I can understand why she said that because I got my B.S. in Speech-Lang Pathology at TU and a lot of the classes crossed over between the two programs.
But there were some TU students who were really good. One of them made it through school despite the fact that she had rheumatoid arthritis at the time that was so bad that she was on gold shots. She ended up working for a major hospital in town. She was a real sweetheart.
I guess you find types "who don't like to get their hands dirty" in any class from any college.
Lana, I also forgot to mention...
I did call OSU-Okmulgee about the nursing program and hopefully they'll send me an info packet. The bad part is that Okmulgee is going to be an hour's drive from here. :) Actually, Rogers State is about 36 minutes, so maybe they'll be back in the running (although I don't like it that you need to take A&P from them and no one else ).
We will see what happens though...

A friend of mine was taking Anatomy at TCC this spring and she had a girl in her class who was taking the Anatomy there and taking A&P at Rogers at the same time and then was going to take Phsio this summer just so she had all her bases covered. That's crazy. They also have either a dosage calc or pharm class that you have to take there as a prereq. Why do colleges have to make you jump through hoops? Let us take the standard prereqs so that we have options!

It is comforting for me to see that others have done the same types of research I have done trying to get into the right nursing program for them as soon as they can. I started my pursuit of nursing Mar 05 and I studied paths to take relentlessly (okay, one might say obsessively). Finally the TTC / TCC 1+1 program opened up for me, determining my path.
Good luck BabyRN2Be.
