Baby Nurse

Hi everyone!! I'm a brand new nurse and starting my first job on the Medical/Surgical floor. I want to fully prepared and I'm wondering what are the most important things to have on the job? Do I need a drug guide book or should I download an app on my phone? Thank you all!!

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

I love epocrates. I've used it a ton!

there are free sources: charge nurse, pharmacist, experienced nurses

Specializes in LTC, med/surg, hospice.

We have micromedex and other useful applications on our computers. Micromedex is great for finding out IV compatibility. I would not carry around a drug guide. And since our computers have internet, a google search also yields some good information.

Specializes in SICU, trauma, neuro.

We have Micromedex and Lexicomp on our work computers; I use those exclusively. So much faster to look it up in a search box, the info is always up-to-date, and you don't have to carry a thick book around. Plus, you can look up IV compatibility just by typing in the drugs you're looking for. That really came in handy the other day when I had someone on Fentanyl, Versed, Atracurium, Nicardipine, MgSO4, 3% NaCl, plus the NS line w/ intermittent drugs piggybacked into it. But back to topic, the online IV compatibility reference is hugely useful.

As far as the app, it might be a good thing to have for your own use, like if you're home studying or something. But many employers don't allow phones to be visible on the floor.

The most important thing to have on the job will be an open mind and open ears. You will learn so much in these next few months. Good Luck!
