B.S. Degree in Gerontology

Published

Well-due to financial reasons at home, I have had to leave school & take on a job. Very, very upsetting-but no choice, I hung on as long as I could.

During clinicals-I realized that I really enjoy our elderly population and that they tend to swept under the rug in our society. I want to help them.

So I am also volunteering as an ombudsman-LOVE IT- and am thinking about pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Gerontology online at one of our colleges. This I can afford because I get grants, my nursing school only took loans.

Is there hope for employment out there with a gerontology degree? I also have a paralegal degree (2 year).

Thanks!

Specializes in ORTHOPAEDICS-CERTIFIED SINCE 89.

Seniors are my favorite also and I found my niche in Orthopaedics.

Does your school offer a degree in gerontology? Would it be a Nursing degree?

I love my LOLs and LOMs to pieces.

I could be wrong but I thought you had to get your masters in order to specialize in an area. You get your BSN (Bachelors of Science in Nursing) then you get your Masters in Gerontology, but there is no reason why you can't work in Gerontology while you are persuing your masters. Or if you are desperate for work now get your ADN (associates degree in nursing) then find an RN to BSN program then persue your masters.

With an ADN you'll finish in 2 years get your RN and you can work in Gerontology.

Good luck!

This isn't a nursing degree. I had to leave nursing school to get a job to support my family who was trying to live on less than a thousand dollars a month.

This is a regular Bachelor of Science in Gerontology. I am just trying to see if there are other jobs out there (non-nursing) that I might be able to get so that I can still assist the elderly.

Sorry for the confusion and thanks!

You might want to look at the requirements for becoming a nursing home administrator in your state.

I can't believe your school doesn't accept grants! http://www.geron.org/StudentOrg/careers.htm

What a great link! Thank you so very much! The grant thing is a bit weird-and very disappointing! Thanks again!

Great idea! I didn't think of that! Thank you!
