Azusa Pacific University ELM Spring 2017

Published

Hi all!

I'm applying for APU's ELM program for Spring 2017 and I was curious to see who else was applying :) maybe we could chat about the application process!

Specializes in Critical Care.

Can I please ask the people who were accepted what your stats are? GPA and experience. I am planning to apply for Fall 2017 and am still preparing for my application. Thank you!

Hi jmroh! I am not sure how much you already know so I hope this is not boring :-) The application is on a points scale. If your grades are high you can get all points for that section, which I think is 15 points for overall GPA and 10 points for just your science GPA. I applied with a 3.98 overall and a 4.0 science. I had absolutely no medical experience so I don't think I got points for that (I think there is up to 5 points or something in that area). You will need 30 points to be considered but you get points just for interviewing and points for a writing prompt, which was more fun than stressful. Hope that helps and good luck on your application! I would suggest submitting it early and make sure every single section is filled out or they might overlook it.

Hi jmroh! I had a 2.8 overall, but a 3.9 non-science and I think a 3.2 science. So my grades weren't stellar haha. For your overall, they only look at your undergrad GPA and do not factor in any courses that you have taken after graduating which wasn't great for me because I didn't do very well in my undergrad. But I made up some points with medical experience, volunteer experience, work experience, and experience working/volunteering out of the country. Azusa looks at each applicant pretty holistically which worked out well for me. I also sent in my GRE scores, which were high, so I don't know if that helped me.

I had 3.2 overall with 3.9 in science pre reqs.

Hi All,

I got a call this morning from Renee. I am now bumped up to the earlier cohort, Fall 2016! This means that there is a spot open for Spring 2017 so hopefully one of you gets a call really soon!

Congratulations! That's so exciting! Part of me really wants to just start already, but then another part of me knows that I need the time to save up some money haha

briforsure, My thoughts exactly. I think I stressed my husband out because we thought we had some time but books are in June and I already scheduled the doctors appointment, which will be another stack of bills haha. I am also pretty sad that my first day is also my daughters first day of kindergarten! I was already emotional but now I am just a big soppy mess!

Hey jmroh! My overall was a 3.65. Science prereq was a 3.7 and a 3.8 non science.

hi gcnorthrim, I have a question about the doctors appointment. I'm assuming you're going in for the physical and vaccinations? Are you getting titers for everything? Or how do you know which vaccinations to get? I applied for the Spring 2017 location in San Diego but got accepted to the Fall 2016 in Inland Empire so I need to make my appointments but I'm not sure if my yellow card is sufficient or do I need to get re-vaccinated? Thanks in advance!

Atnn012, This is the email I got today so I hope this explains it. It is the list of vaccinations and you can either get multiple or a titers and as it states the multiple vaccines are less expensive than ordering a titers report. They all get uploaded as a PDF and then sent to a website but I haven't gotten that info yet. I am going to ask my Dr if I should get multiple vaccines or just one and a titers.

Please make an appointment with your health care provider now to complete the attached Physical Examination form and discuss the below listed immunizations and titers. I have attached an additional document regarding the 2 step TB which you may find helpful.

o Measles (Rubeola) - 2 vaccine series OR titer

o Mumps - 2 vaccine series OR titer

o Rubella - 2 vaccine series OR titer

o Varicella (Chicken Pox) - 2 vaccine series OR titer

o Hepatitis B series - 3 vaccines OR titer

o TB - 2 step TB Skin Test (1-3 weeks apart totaling 4 visits) or QuantiFERON TB Gold

o Tetorifice, Diphtheria & Pertussis (Tdap) - Last 10 years

o CPR Certification – Your card must state American Heart Association Healthcare Provider (no other cards will be accepted)

o Physical Examination – Form Attached

A Titer requires a blood draw to measure the presence and amount of antibodies. A titer proves immunity to disease. You must provide the actual lab report in order to be cleared. Titers are much more expensive than vaccines.

You must be completely cleared by Orientation in August so get started on these now and don't delay.

Great! Thank you so much! Do you also mind sending me the instructions for the TB shots as well?

I can send it to you. Do you have an email because it is 2 pages long so copy and paste would be crazy. It basically says get a TB come back a week later and get another just to come back a week later to get it read again. The whole purpose is to make sure an old infection is ruled out or treated, as old ones can show a negative result the first time. Anyways, I can send it just let me know where.
