AZ new grad- why isn't anyone calling???

Published

Hello everyone! I have been doing a lot of research and come to the conclusion that Phoenix is pretty much the worst state for new grad RNs, however, most of the information I can find is pretty much from 2011 and older. I'm curious how other new grads are doing this year. I graduated in May, licensed in July and have put out close to 200 apps with not 1 call for an interview. It's so disappointing to have worked so hard and now nothing.

I was licensed in March and started working in April. I interviewed for 3 places and got two job offers. None of which were at hospitals but I'm pretty happy where I am at.

Congratulations!! What type of facility are you working? Will it count as that "golden year" of acute care? Regardless, any experience is good experience.

Specializes in Emergency/Trauma.

AZ pumps out something like 800-1000 new nurses per semester. That's pretty much the reason there are so many unemployed. I was licensed in January and started working March 1, but in an outpatient women's surgical setting. I still apply to hospitals trying to get my foot in the door, and as of today have 300 applications out. I got a call from a recruiter for my dream department today... unfortunately it's in Texas. There's just no work here.

I think the facility is close to acute care. I know I've hung blood, TPN, and had patients on a tele monitor, to mention a few things. I am also going back to get my bachelors degree so hopefully that with a year experience will get me where I want to go. Hang in there I think most everyone from my graduating class got jobs. It just took some time. Good luck

I feel your pain :/ I graduated in December last year and have been putting out resumes non-stop. I am working home health but I feel this isn't giving me any real experience that will get me into a hospital. I only got the job because my friend worked there. Other than that, no other calls. It's depressing :( I am also enrolled in the BSN program but it seems like it comes down to who you know now-a-days and not much else. My next stop is the job fairs because that seems to be the only way I will actually get to see someone face-to-face! Good luck, though!!! Hopefully we all get our break soon because we deserve it :)

I got licensed in January and still unemployed. I am enrolled in a BSN program which I thought would help, but no luck. I had two interviews and the rejection came from no experience and no official BSN. Im confused because if I dont get a chance, how will I ever get experience. What is also confusing is that I have talk to veteran nurses who complain about the workload and long hours and Im sitting at home in my right mind and with full strength and no opportunity to help relieve the nursing community or help heal the public. My current mindset is to get out of AZ ASAP. There is plenty new grads without work, you are not alone. These schools are steadily accepting students and taking the money and leaving them at the end with no help or guidance.

definitely true. my former supervisor graduated with his bsn, good gpa, internship, etc. but what was key is that he spent 10+ years in the military and wanted to work at a Veterans Affairs hospital so that he could serve the military community. for those who don't know, being a veteran gives you additional points scored toward you application. he didn't get the job, even with the veteran's preference. when he asked "did you at least hire another veteran?" the manager said no, they hired somebody's granddaughter. i mean really?!?! :banghead: who is better equipped to build patient rapport/patient compassion/make them feel comfortable than someone who has served just as they did. i am also in the military and have worked with veterans and their families. when you are military, it's an instant connection; people open up and trust you because you are relatable. it's like the military population is one big family. instead of selecting someone who would be good for the patients, they selected someone who was good for another employee. it's completely unjust. that's my two cents lol! (i'm really not an angry person but this situation upsets me)

I graduated in May with my ADN in St. Louis, MO. Ive applied to hundreds of positions, had 3 interviews..still unemployed. Im enrolled in a BSN program as well. I will graduate Aug. 2013 with that, & if I am not working as a RN by then...peace out STL. Its very competitive here too, there are ten nursing schools in this area that I can think of off the top of my head. In the mean time, Im broke, so I think Im going to start applying to seasonal retail positions at the mall. I have to get $ somehow

Specializes in Ambulatory surgery.

I graduated in December 2011 with my ADN, got licensed this past February, and have been job-hunting ever since. If I had known that people only want BSNs, I wouldn't have wasted all of this time...and money.
