(yes I already know I am extra)
I was wondering, do any of you participate in the awards ceremony as the school nurse? I ask because... as I was exiting the cafeteria the other day I overheard one of my 3rd grade students remind their substitute (that was already aware but not paying attention) that a student that she sat next to him had a severe food allergy to peanut butter and that he had a peanut butter sand which in his lunchbox *face palm*. It caught me off guard and I turned around and helped fix the situation. I told him I was very, very proud of him for recognizing this! That was HUGE. I thought about doing something for him for the award ceremony but I'm not sure what I would put on the reward?
Suggestions? Please don't suggest I do nothing lol. As mentioned above, I already know I am super extra lol! I go above and beyond for my students especially when it comes to positive reinforcement.

We have something called "Way to Go Awards" that we can give kids when we catch them doing something good and using the life skills we encourage. I've given those lots of times. It gets read on the announcements and they get a school mascot pencil.

I don't see how you could recognize him at the awards ceremony without violating privacy issues for the one with the peanut allergy. Besides, you already praised him for such a proactive intervention; maybe call his parents and pass the "atta-boy" on to them.

We have STOM Student of The Month awards and they can be for anything. or we can mail home a post card.
I think in the OP situation, the child can be recognized for
"just stepping up for another child"

We have "Bucket Fillers" here and students get treasure cards for actions recognized by teachers and staff here in our building- Going the extra mile for each other, holding doors, volunteering to help a student in need, etc... If they are awarded a treasure card, they are recognized during morning announcements and then can pick a small something from the counselor's treasure box (pencils, fun shaped erasers, etc...)That's how I recognize something like you mentioned. I think that, plus the praise you have already given is plenty enough. I may be a bit finicky when it comes to stuff like this but I'm not one to jump at passing out a trophy or certificate every time a student does something good.

I did not plan on sharing information of the incident in verbatim. But thank you for the insight!

I have never given awards for anything like this. By positive reinforcement, I mean I throw the kids that are responsible with their glasses all year a pizza party at the end of the year but as far as rewards, this is it. This would be the first this year. I only want to do it because it was health related and very wise, and avoided a possible disaster. Thank you for the insight!
