AVC 2021 Spring Nursing Program

Published

Hello!!

I've noticed that there was not a thread for the AVC Spring 2021 nursing program and I wanted to make one so that anyone can share their thoughts and to give encouragement to anyone who needs it.

I've personally used a previous thread (AVC Fall 2020) which helped me figure out what I needed to do before I entered the program and the thread answered any questions that I had.

So don't be shy, ask any questions. If you have any questions for me I'd love to answer them. I hope all the best for everyone.

Sincerely,

TotallyARealNurse

Hi guys, I just sent in my packet today. Anyone else apply and know when we should be hearing back? Does anyone know the cut off points?

Thanks

I snooped the last few semesters threads and it seems that they generally send out letters for Spring around Thanksgiving. No idea when they’ll be doing it this year though due to the application extension and the Spring semester starting in January this year compared to February in the past. Plus they sent out fall acceptances like a month later than usual due to Covid, so who knows when we’ll find out ?

Anyone want to share how many points they are applying with? How you did on the TEAS?

I’m applying with 70 points. I got an 89.3 on the TEAS.

The fall semester only accepts 40 students and this last groups lowest points were 65.
The Spring cohort accepts 60 students and the cut off for last years was 55 points.

I got an 82 on my TEAS and am applying with 65 points.

I got an 84 on TEAS (my second attempt) and am applying with 75 points. Good luck to everyone!

Has anyone contacted the nursing department to confirm they've received the application?

On the TEAS, I got a 92. My total points for the application is 65 points. I looked at previous threads and some expressed that acceptances seem to be based on total points. What do you guys think?

Also, good luck to everyone applying!

@nursinglife661 When I asked ------------------- if I should email her to see if she received my application, she said she will email me. I haven't received an email from her yet, but I tracked my mail and was notified that it arrived Monday.

@Hopefulformyfuture I didn't realize Spring 2021 nursing would start early. Did they announce it on the website? With that being the case, are you guys prepping for anything beforehand (e.g. gathering certain documents they might ask for, looking over any study materials)?

@Lotus-bukad I also tracked my application and it arrived on Monday as well! And from my understanding, acceptances are based only on total points. As for the Spring semester starting early, AVC is changing the school year calendar to have Spring semesters start in January instead of February, starting next semester (Fall semesters will still start in August). I received an email about it a few months ago, and if you look at the Spring semester start date on the website, it says January 11th. I haven’t started prepping yet though. Good luck to you as well!

I also tracked my application. Any word on when we should be hearing from them about acceptance? And does anyone know if next semester is virtual learning at AVC?

Hi I’m preparing for the TEAS. Can you give me any tips on how to study. you have a great score btw.

@Nurse2be661 Thank you! Depending on how much time you have, create a study schedule that works for you. For the TEAS, I had 2 months to prepare (did not study consistently though). Also, leading up to the test day, I took multiple practice tests and my scores were everywhere (high to rlly low). That being said, I felt the actual test was easier than the practice tests I took. Others I’ve talked to said a mix----the test was easy or the test was tough.

Since the TEAS is worth a lot of points, make it your goal to over prepare. Try reviewing some material and practice problems each day so you can become familiar with how to answer questions. I didn’t get to use all my resources (some practice tests in the book, the book’s online resources, free TEAS problems online), but I wish I did. Try to do as many problems as you can. Here are some other tips:

-Get a good ATI TEAS prep book

  • If you have a good amount of time to study, read through every section of your book. I did that and I used the ATI TEAS 6 Smart Edition
  • A friend who had to take the TEAS in ~2 weeks advised to read over only the areas that are unfamiliar or difficult
  • If you have access to multiple prep books, I suggest sticking to one that you will mainly read. If you come across a section that doesn’t make sense or you need more information, then refer to the other books

-Watch Youtube videos

  • These prep books highlight concepts, but do not include all the details we need to know. Youtube vids can fill in those gaps.
  • For science, watch CrashCourse for all the different systems. I also used some Khan Academy NCLEX, but they can go a bit more in depth than what’s needed for the test (their video on different layers of the skin and general overview of the different systems are good).
    • Here are some examples of topics to cover (use your prep book as a guide to search for videos):
      • For hormones and enzymes, what organ or gland releases those substances and what are their functions
      • Steps of the scientific method
      • Main purposes of the different systems; functions of the different organs
      • Cells of the immune system and their function
      • Pathway of air and food; pathway of blood through the heart and blood vessels
      • Organelles of a cell
  • Math is one of my weaker subjects. So, I searched and answered tons of word practice problems (percentages and interest or sale price, creating formulas and finding values of x y z like if I have a total of a certain amount of money and I have a number of quarters dimes nickels find those values), graph problems, conversion problems (e.g. converting different units; fractions to mixed numbers or decimals or ratios), etc
  • Searching key concepts for the other sections (e.g. main idea vs. topic sentence, compound vs. complex sentences (khan academy has good videos on that)

-Only take notes on material when necessary, focus on practice problems and time yourself

  • Take notes on concepts that are confusing or you continue to get wrong or forget (or  strictly memorization like values of conversion units)
    • It’s too time consuming to outline your prep book or Youtube videos. Read/watch material and then test your knowledge with practice problems
  • Practice problems
    • Do practice problems after reading subsections first
    • If you know ppl studying for the TEAS (or even family and friends), reach out and go over practice problems with them. Discuss reasons why a question might be right/wrong or hear how they chose a specific answer. If it’s still not clicking, review that specific topic more
    • Complete a whole practice test timed at least once or twice. Most of the time, I would do sections of practice tests timed. After each section, I graded and reviewed my answers before moving onto the next segment because it’s still fresh
    • If you want to be familiar with the actual ATI TEAS test format, you can purchase their practice test A and B without the prep book. It is a bit of money, but can be helpful.
    • When solving math problems, use an online calculator. If you take your test remotely, you cannot use a physical calculator.

-Close to your test date, prepare materials

  • Reach out to ATI TEAS about test procedures and what to do if any issues occur (can also communicate with a rep from the school you’re taking the test with). I had an issue when taking the test remotely. I emailed the proctor and called ATI TEAS (took around 40 mins to speak with a rep). They told me that if I had passed an hour without starting my test, I might not be able to take the exam.
  • If you're taking the test remotely, your computer has to meet certain standards in order to take the test. Make sure your computer is good and study with this computer often so on test day you are comfortable

-Get a goodnight’s rest the night before and a good breakfast the day of

  • The exam is relatively long and so staying up all night can be hard to push through on test day. Get enough sleep the night of so you can be mentally checked in during the test.

Wishing you the best of luck as you prepare to take the TEAS. YOU CAN DO IT! Feel free to reach out if you need extra materials or have other questions.

------------------------ sent an email today about receiving my application. After today, they will start reviewing apps. Any apps that are incomplete or have errors will be mailed back.

Thank you for the information. I emailed her last week if she received my application and she never wrote back.

For those of you that are applying as a transfer student, did admission and records already transfer your pre-reqs to AVC? I've already sent my transcripts to AVC admission and records but am having trouble contacting them.

Welcome! That was the same thing with my friend. Maybe there are a lot of applications and she still needs to send emails out.
