As my Australian RN degree does not meet USA requirements I am currently doing the 2 extra courses I need (Pediatrics and Obstetrics/Midwifery) as a Distance Education student, including 80 hours Clinical in each course. Today I was informed by my university that one of their students has just been refused a license in California because the subjects she did as a Distance Education student are not acceptable. I'm devastated ...... can anyone give me more information about this?? (I am planning to apply for licensure in NY).
Many thanks,
Hannah
Deakin is NOT an "online course". It is a brick and mortar university with an approved SON and also offers the subjects by distance learning. The clinical is organized via the university at an affiliate hospital.
Distance learning is the same thing as an on-line program. Every single school in the US that offers on-line programs also has a brick and mortar building and some of them even offer traditional programs. But a state has the right to choose over how the class is completed.
That is the point that I am trying to make. It is actually listed on transcripts when the course is completed on-line as well.
Majority of schools are now required to list if the courses were taken on-line or not. This is something new that has been happening. States in the US are now requiring the information even if the courses were done in the US.
This is what I am trying to explain. Things have been changing over the past year or two. And the op of this thread even stated that she was told that CA was not accepting, and that is most definitely true at this time.
That is why I told her to check with NY and get their opinion on what they will and will not accept now.
I also did my completion courses (Paediatrics/Obstetrics) with Deakin University and did not have any problem with CGFNS (for VisaScreen) and Vermont (for NCLEX-RN). If NY does not accept these courses offered by Deakin, I couldn't think of any other way Australian nurses (who lack in theory/clinicals in these subjects) can complete these courses in Australia (as far as I know, only Deakin University offer such completion courses here in Australia).
The op made a point of stating that she was told by her school and just very recently that someone was denied for CA based on the training there.
Things are changing all over the country now, that is why it is best to check directly with the state involved now and not take everything at face value from a program that is overseas.

It will give you some idea of how things are being handled in that state.
