Austin Community College (ACC) - Fall 2010 Hopefuls

Published

I'm a Fall 2010 applicant at ACC and thought it would be nice for all the Fall 2010 hopefuls to have our own thread to share exciting news, information, and support with each other.

I turned in my application last Friday (Dec. 18th) after taking the HESI exam. I feel good about my scores but I anticipate competition for the Fall spots is going to be quite fierce. After that large applicant pool for Spring I think we will see a lot of re-applicants applying with the 5 extra re-application points. Not sure what that will mean for the ranking scores but it will be interesting to see . . .

Good luck to all the Fall 2010 applicants!

I would like to work, but I have no idea how anyone is planning since we won't know until the last minute when we have clinical. I think it will be a lot easier for Hybrid students to work. If I can't work the first semester, I am hoping to work the second after I get a feel for the program.

I will be working part-time all the way through to the NCLEX! Now that I’m finally registered, my plan is to talk to my boss later this week about whether they’ll let me go part-time in the fall. I’m thinking 16-20 hours a week, probably two or three days. For hybrid, we only have to be somewhere for two days a week, so it makes it easier.

Before my company got bought out, I was sure they’d agree to part-time – but with our new Corporate Overlords, I’m a little less sure. Hopefully by the end of this week I will be able to say that I was able to work something out with my current gig. If not … well, I’ll have 8 weeks to figure something else out. My husband is self-employed, and we have enough savings to cover us for a year or a year and a half if neither of us works at all. Obviously depleting our savings is NOT a good option, though!

Does anyone know for sure how long our clinical days are? In my mind they’re 8 hours but I might have completely made that up.

Specializes in Geriatrics, Med/Surg, hospice.

I am doing the LVN program but I will be working a few days a month waiting tables for extra spending money but I will mostly be relying on aide, loans and my husbands income. I hope to get a job at a hospital or other health care place once LVN school starts.. unfortunately my CNA certification expired in March.

Speaking of money... has anyone been able to claim their aide from ACC? I checked my status a week ago and it showed an amount I'd been awarded but now when I go into it, it says '0' and I can't access the 'Accept or Reject' page on the page either...

I was a level 1 hybrid student last semester and I was at the hospital on Wednesdays from 6:30am-2pm and Thursdays from 1:30pm-7pm. We usually had an exam every 2 weeks that required us to be on campus for an hour or two.

Hello All! I am a new member here. After initially being rejected at the rank of 184, I have been accepted to the Fall ADN program!!! I have until July 14th to decide, but I'm probably going to defer this semester and start in January. Good luck to those on down the list who are still waiting!

Hi, poigirl! Congratulations on acceptance! I'm sorry that you'll be deferring, but you'll be ready to go for Spring 2011!

Wow, so that means they've gone down 24 spots on the waiting list. That seems like a lot -- 15%. I wonder if it's always that many.

I also got a late acceptance. But unfortunately all they had open was CEC so I had to defer too. I asked like 5 times if they had any hybrid spots open and they said no. They did tell me that with my extra 5 points for Spring giving me a 56 that I will most definitely get my first choice of hybrid. So I can wait. My friend who just graduated from ACC said she knew alot of people in the ACC LVN program who had applied to the RN program also were deferring. She knew at least 12 who got accepted but decided to just continue the LVN and then do bridge later.

I am only deferring because I recently started a new job that I enjoy. This will give me time to save money and focus on yoga and fire spinning. Did anyone take the Basic Nursing Skills class at EVC in March? I'd like to know if a buddy of mine made it into the fall class. He was previously trained as a massage therapist. Can't wait to start in the Spring!!!

I went to pick out my uniforms today. It was a difficult choice since there were multiple styles of pants and tops to choose from. I hope I like what I picked out once I get to bring them home to try on.

Does anyone know when we will have to wear our lab coat? Is it worn during clinicals? If so, is it optional? I thought I remember someone saying we only had to wear it when we go to the hospital to pick up our patient information the night before clinical. I'm just curious because it seems like it might be uncomfortable.

I finished the hybrid program. Working a lot is really difficult to do AND be successful because there is just massive volumes of work involved. The clinicals were like 6:30 to 2:30 or 1:30 to 1:30 to 8:30. It varies, and it is possible to swap with classmates to try to get a location/time/dates that work better for you. There were 12 hour shifts in pediatrics, but most of it was early morning. There are some Saturdays, and there were even some as far as San Marcos.

The lab coats you only wear over your street clothes to go the day before to pick a patient.

If any one wants to PM me I have multiple scrubs sets and a lab coat with the patches for the program.

Good luck.

It is very difficult to find a job in Austin as a new Grad. Saint David's has 1000 new Grad applications and "not much left" for openings. Seton had about a 10% acceptance rate for the Versant applicants.

But the current drug book at the Eastview Book Store. Do NOT loose the little CD inside, this will be very handy.

Those that are starting this fall, are you getting the nurse's drug guide 2011 or the 2010 that was on the list?

I got the 2010, but now that I know there's a 2011 I wonder if it might be a good idea to return it... :/
