Austin Community College (ACC) - Fall 2010 Hopefuls

Published

I'm a Fall 2010 applicant at ACC and thought it would be nice for all the Fall 2010 hopefuls to have our own thread to share exciting news, information, and support with each other.

I turned in my application last Friday (Dec. 18th) after taking the HESI exam. I feel good about my scores but I anticipate competition for the Fall spots is going to be quite fierce. After that large applicant pool for Spring I think we will see a lot of re-applicants applying with the 5 extra re-application points. Not sure what that will mean for the ranking scores but it will be interesting to see . . .

Good luck to all the Fall 2010 applicants!

I'll be buying the 2011 version, especially since there really isn't much of a cost difference with both around $35 new online.

I also opted for the International version for my Med-Surg textbook. I've purchased many of my other Pre-Nursing textbooks this way off of eBay and saved hundreds of dollars. The material is exactly the same - including color text and illustrations and supplemental CD's. I have never experienced problems with the content or page numbers matching the U.S. version texts either.

The text I've had the most trouble finding is the Evolve Case Study one - guessing that will be one I'll purchase through the ACC bookstore.

I grabbed the Test Success book early too since I've heard it's a good one to read BEFORE you start so that you can focus your energy on the material and not on test taking/study strategies.

Are there any other books anyone is purchasing based on recommendations or reviews online to supplement the "Required" and "Recommended" list we already have from the ADN Dept?

Specializes in Geriatrics, Med/Surg, hospice.

Hey all, just a PSA here today I went to Pro Med here in Austin (on S. lamar) and got my physical and tB test. It was $50 for BOTH tests! I was really shocked bc when I had called around before I kept getting "$50-$100 for physical, $30 for Tb" etc but the girl at the check out said that they ahve a special discount for ACC programs. Just thought some might find the info helpful!

August 23 is getting so close! :)

Who's going to the "Jump Start" workshop August 2? I'm excited to go and finally feel like everything is starting.

Other things I've done this month to be proactive:

- Cleaned out my closet and room to make room for a desk

- Went to Target to stock up on shampoo, socks, school supplies, soap... all those things I don't want to have to worry about while in school

- gone to the dentist so I don't have to make an appointment during the semester

- worked extra shifts so I have some money saved up

- reviewed dosaging

- reviewed the nursing skills videos

- done my leisure reading (no more time for that come 8/23!)

- basically worked on any project on my to do list since I think I will have no time for that over the next two years.

What is everyone else doing to get ready?

I'll be there!

Let's see...

-I'm moving, since I won't be able to afford where I'm living on a PT income

-Quitting my job, since I can't work there PT

-Getting a new PT job at a hospital

-Reviewing ANA/PHYS, 1105, and dosage

-Buying stuff for school

-Saying goodbye to my reading for pleasure

-Explaining to my kids that I'll still be their daddy even if I never get to see them after school starts (KIDDING!) :)

I’ll be there, too! I can’t wait. Let’s see, what have I done to get ready…

Designed a plan to keep my current position at work part-time, and got them to agree to it (woohoo!). A lot of what I’m doing now is getting work stuff squared away.

Rearranged my gym/running schedule – I won’t have long lunches for the gym anymore. I signed up for the San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in November, so unless I want to forfeit the fee, I need to keep on track.

Cleared out my reading room so I have a quiet place to study.

Bought not one but two rolling backpacks so I can do a side-by-side comparison.

Ordered/bought EVERYTHING for school, including white shirts for under my scrubs (gotta hide the tattoos!). I’m wearing my shoes around the house to break them in.

Reviewed 1105 reading/videos, and put in some time in the lab last week. I’m dreading it, but I’m going to force myself to go back and make the stupid bed a few times to make sure I still can do it. Toe folds, people, toe folds!

Reviewed dosage calculations.

Read the “Test Success” book that was recommended by the department, as well as the “How to Survive Nursing School” book that other folks here recommended.

Skimmed some of the modules used by Level I last semester to get an idea of what we’re in for.

Done as much reading, sewing, movie-watching, and knitting as possible, since I know all that is about to go out the window!

Braced my husband for the emotional, stressed-out, exhausted creature I’m about to become.

Purkinje - I'm curious what two rolling backpacks you selected. Any conclusions yet on which one you prefer? I've seen some neat ones online but feel hesitant to buy anything I can't play around with a little first.

Where did the LAZY days of summer go??!! The summer has been ZOOMING by! :uhoh3:

I'm starting to hyperventilate a teeny bit - juggling everything now is a challenge and adding in Nursing School is going to make everything quite interesting! I'm so impressed by all the advance prep everyone has fit into the summer so far! Between kids/family, work, classes, and some major house remodeling - I've barely started prepping for Fall.

I did glance over the "Test Success" and Med-Surg books and have about half of my books ordered along with the lab pack. I bought some used scrubs from a former student and found a white pair of Dansko clogs. Working on finishing the online clinical modules to submit to the department next week before the August 1st deadline. I'm waiting until early August (when my classes will be behind me and hopefully most of the remodeling craziness) to focus on reviewing for the dosage and skills exams. Figured they might give us some pointers too at the August 2nd Jump Start meeting on what we can expect in the early weeks!

Down to FIVE weeks!!!

Hi All! Just wanted to stop by and let you know about the Jump Start. I attended last semester and I don't want to sound negative but the seminar is very "general" and is arranged by people who are not necessarily going to be involved in your day to day nursing school adventures. With that being said, it is good to see your classmates and meet the nursing tutor. Just don't go in with any expectations about gaining details on your specific peogram. I had high hopes and was let down, which stressed me out. Anywho, just my thoughts. Good luck to you all, you"ll do great!

The first bag is a Magellan Sportswear Campus Trekker. I found it on a shelf at Academy and it was the only one there; I can’t find it online anywhere, either. It’s roomy but cumbersome – I think that will be an issue with all of them, though. The second one is the Jansport Wheeled Superbreak. It was supposed to come today, but my husband wasn’t home to sign for it. I think it’s going to come down to whatever is more comfortable to wear. There’s something about the Campus Trekker that just feels strange, but it might be because I’m not accustomed to wearing a wheeled backpack. Once I get the other one, I’ll load them each up and try them out. I’m hoping the straps are set farther apart with the Jansport than the Magellan, because I think that would help stabilize the load better.

Today I noticed our massage therapist at work has a Calpak, but I’m not sure what model. I didn’t want one with the little feet on the front because it just felt too luggage-y, but I like his. He said he got it at Goodwill and it’s held up nicely.

GG, you are so right about summer zooming by … seems like just yesterday we were anxiously waiting to find out if we got in! 31 days until the semester starts.

Reef, a friend of mine told me that the Jump Start sessions were a little cheesy but overall she was glad she went. Did you find orientation itself to be more what you were looking for in terms of specific information? Also, have you been at all involved in the nursing student organization on campus?

The best part about the Jump Start was the Q & A session with 3rd semester students. My class orientation with my teachers is where I received the bulk of the info on our classes. I wasn't involved with any group except my clinical group! ;) I am sure that being part of a group will look good on your resume, though.

Overstock.com has some good prices on the Calpak brand of wheeled backpacks. They have a few models that look more like regular backpacks without the large feet.

Ebags.com also has the Jansport Driver 8 which got good reviews on allnurses. I like how ebags.com has videos to show some of their backpacks. I would wait for another sale before buying a backpack on ebags because they were just doing a 20% off sale.

Purkinje - Were there a lot of people at open lab when you went last week?

Our FedEx guy came back in the evening and I got my Jansport Superbreak -- I like it a lot more than the first one I had. The weight is distributed much more comfortably. It's still not as easy to carry as a regular backpack, but for what it is, it's a good choice. I think if I had a laptop I'd have done the Driver 8; since I don't, I went with the slightly smaller/cheaper option.

(I found a 20% off + free shipping promo code for eBags, but I'm not sure how long it's valid -- EMCATASM2A.)

There was one other person at the lab mid-morning on Monday. I'm hoping that for the next few weeks it will be empty Friday afternoons, because that's the only time I can go ...

Hi everyone!

This is the first time I have posted. I applied to the ACC nursing school in June 10' and my rank was a 48. I did not get a petition for the nursing skills class. I plan to reapply on Jan 15th 11' with a 53.

I am also looking at the TX State nursing program in RR. TX state says I need to take Nutrition and also says I need to retake CHEM 1 and CHEM 2. I took these 2 chem classes back in 1993 when I got my undergrad. They said I needed to retake them because they are too old. :-( In the meantime I am taking Nutrition and may take the chemistry classes this spring and summer so that I could possibly go to TX State in the Fall of 11'.

I would rather go to ACC and get my ADN and then decide to get my BSN later. Is it really necessary for me to get my BSN if I want to be a bedside nurse (hospice)?

Please offer me some advice.... I don't want to spend the extra money to get my BSN if my ADN is sufficient.

Thanks!
